I gazed around in amazement. The lake looked even more vast (if that’s even possible) in the day! As soon as we came close, everything went silent. We were looking at the lake from a mound of sand and it looked huge from a bird’s eye view. I crouched down below the mound trying to control myself. My hands started getting sweaty and my heart was pounding a million miles a minute. Get a grip Alex! You have to do this! I scolded myself. I took a deep breath to calm myself. I looked at Will and he seemed as nervous as I felt.
“Are you ready?” I asked.
“Yes, I’m ready,” Together we emerged from the mound and walked down the steep slope to the lake. I looked around.
“What’s supposed to happen now?” I asked. Nobody was there and it was eerily silent. I had a bad feeling about this.
“I have no idea. Are you sure you’re right about this?” Will asked worriedly.
“I’m sure,” I reassured him. Suddenly dark luminous clouds started forming and lighting flashed.
“What’s happening?” I panicked. The clouds started to get darker and rain started pouring. It wasn’t a light pour it was torrents! The drops (which were the size of hail!) hurt when they hit our heads. I could barely see my hands let alone Will! Smoke started appearing, coming from the lake. It was engulfing Will and me. I was panicking; running blindly to try and get away from the horrid smoke. It smelt like death and decay which of course reminded me of my dream. I gave up running and I just sat down, waiting. I faced the lake, or where I thought the lake was anyway, and I saw a dark figure. It was barely visible in the smoke but I could definitely see something. I had a feeling that, that was The Lord of Destruction. I tried running in that direction but I went straight into something I couldn’t see. I put my hands out blindly and I felt something hard and round. It was like a glass dome. Then out of the gloom I heard that voice again. Dark and ominous.
“You’re at the last part of your journey,” it said. “Only the one with the powerful knife may pass the force field and cross The Lake to face The Lord alone. Will you live? Or will you die?” it finished. Then another voice said “Remember, all of mankind is in your hands,” I was shaking when the voice disappeared but I knew what to do. I took out my knife and blindly put it on the round force field. I closed my eyes and tried to summon every ounce of energy I had. Behind my closed lids I saw the knife glow blue. It was so bright, even behind my closed eyes. Suddenly, I felt my body being sucked through the dome. It was like when you accidently suck your toe in the vacuum cleaner, just, it’s your whole body. Then I was outside. I was facing The Lake and the sudden brightness made me squint. Gradually my eyes adjusted and I gasped in horror. In the middle of The Lake was the unspeakable monster that I had seen when I was travelling to this wretched place. It was even scarier in real life and I was so frightened I thought I might pass out there and then. It was entirely black but even from here I could see the bugs crawling around it. In and out of its mouth and up and down its horrible body. It was flickering, as if on a bad satellite feed. The worst thing about it all was its breathing. Whenever it breathed out, it made a horrible rasping noise, as if it couldn’t get enough air. Whenever I heard it, shivers went up and down my spine and I imagined ghosts rattling chains. Meet the devil, I thought miserably. The Lord of Destruction met my eyes and he opened his horrible mouth as if in a sneer. The largest cockroaches I had ever seen came pouring out of his mouth and I almost screamed in horror. I swallowed my fear though, took a deep breath and stepped off the edge of the bank. I’d braced myself for the icy water but surprisingly it didn’t come. I was walking on water! I tried to appear as confident as possible but I’m sure The Lord could smell the fear radiating off of me. I might as well have had a neon sign on me saying: Here I am! Kill me now! The short stretch of water felt like years as I was walking but I eventually reached the middle. I was very wary and the closer I got to The Lord the more horrible he got. He had a certain smell, kind of like the smoke he set of, death and decay.
