“Are you kidding me?” I asked in disbelief. We were standing beside some very strange, but friendly dinosaurs and Will expected us to ride them to the volcano; when I haven’t even rode a donkey, let alone a dinosaur!
“Nope. Get on,” and he demonstrated by swinging his legs on one side and sliding on. It looked easy but I wasn’t taking any chances so I slid on behind Will leaving Lucy with the other one. I didn’t think she would mind as she goes horse-riding but she gave me an unfriendly stare as she went on the one behind us. I frowned. What was wrong with her lately?
Two hours later we were nearly there but I felt really sick because the dinosaurs don’t ride smoothly. It’s like being on a boat, in a storm. It was horrible.
Finally we got to the edge of the volcano. It was huge and you could feel the heat radiating of it!
“What do we do now?” I asked. Lucy was ignoring me and wasn’t speaking to anyone. As we stood there speculating on what to do, I heard a loud roar and my insides turned to jelly. I didn’t want to turn around but I did anyway and almost passed put in fright! A gigantic dinosaur was running straight for us! I assumed it was a T-Rex. But there was something odd on its back and as it got closer I realised it was a human!
“What?” I asked. “Is that person riding a T-Rex?” I asked in bewilderment.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Why are they just standing there when they should be running? If you were in my situation, you would understand. I was so confused I couldn’t concentrate on anything but the person riding on the T-Rex. I mean, can you get any stupider? But of course, Will had the brains and knew what to do.
“Climb!” he yelled. Hmm, maybe he doesn’t have the brains after all.
“Yeah! Like I didn’t think of that one!” I yelled sarcastically back at him. We started to climb the volcano and we eventually got to a ledge that was jutting out. I looked down and realised that the dinosaur was where we were just a couple of minutes ago, so you could call it a close one! I could see the thing that was on his back clearly now and it looked like a blue monkey!
What? I thought. A monkey riding a dinosaur! Can this place get any weirder?
The thing looked up at me, and my eyes widened in fright. Its face was so ugly that you couldn’t even see its eyes! It opened its mouth in a sort of sneer, and its teeth were all jagged and yellow!
“What is that?” I screamed.
“I have no idea!” Will screamed back. “But we have bigger problems! Look!”
He was pointing to the top of the volcano where lava was now spewing. I felt like giving up right there and then but something made me determined. As I was watching the lava, I saw the pterodactyl circling above a ledge just a little way up from ours! As I watched closer I realised that it was trying to save its baby. The baby pterodactyl had its wing stuck under a large rock. It must have been its nest! Why they built they’re nest on a volcano, I couldn’t fathom but I wanted to save the poor thing so I started to climb higher. As I was unthinkingly climbing I realised that it was the nest. As in the nest from the riddle! This must be it, I thought to myself, so I climbed higher and harder. Soon I’d reached the ledge and the baby squawked in alarm. I could hear Will yelling for me to come back down, but I ignored him.
“It’s ok, I won’t hurt you,” I soothed creeping cautiously to the rock. I didn’t have much time as the lava was steadily flowing towards us. I went up to the rock and tried to summon the power I’d felt when the light was inside me.
Then I pushed. I pushed and pulled and eventually the rock started to move. I pulled it of off the baby’s wing and it squawked in delight. But I wasn’t interested in the baby; there was something underneath the rock. The mother pterodactyl squawked in alarm and went to pick me up. Before it could I picked up the item then I was soaring through the air. I looked back in a panic at my friends but I didn’t have to worry because other pterodactyls were saving them to. I sighed in relief and felt my eyes drooping. I was exhausted! Soon I was fast asleep enjoying the swooping motion and the steady beat of wings.
