The Room Of Vines

We’d been searching for hours in rooms that never seemed to end but there was no sign of Will.

“He could be anywhere!” I complained coming to a stop beside a golden suit of armour we’d passed at least three times already.

“Do you think you could do that, floating up in the air thingy and just tell us where he is?” I asked Lucy.

“I can’t control it!” she said indignantly “But I’ll give it a try,”

She got up from the floor and spread her arms out with her eyes closed. She stayed like that for a couple of minutes and I was starting to get annoyed when suddenly she started to rise of off the floor, like last time. After staying in the air for a while, she started to float back down and collapsed to the floor. She looked exhausted, as if her power was draining her. I caught her and she had to sit down.

“So where is he?” I asked expectantly. I was starting to miss Will.

“Follow me!” she yelled getting to her feet, with a new burst of energy.

We ran pass so many doors and flew past so many corners I lost count. Finally Lucy skidded to a stop outside a door that had nothing on it. It was completely bare! In fact it was so bare, it looked almost see-through. I frowned and leaned closer.

To close!

The door seemed to reach out and grab me!

It sucked me into the unknown. I screamed and heard Lucy yell my name. I felt myself falling and landed on something soft. I looked down and saw creepy vines crawling along me and they were squeezing. I screamed and struggled which was a bad idea because it just squeezed harder! As I was struggling in the darkness I saw a pinprick of light.

“Help!” I yelled in desperation to the light. Wow I think I have gone crazy. I thought, yelling at a light?

“Alex?” it was Will!

“Will!” I screamed in relief and delight.

“Alex, what are you doing down here?” he asked in disbelief.

“It’s a long story! But first, how do we get out of here?” But before I could continue there was a loud scream and Lucy popped down beside me, still screaming. I looked up and realised we’d been sucked down a chasm. I could still see light coming from the door above. It was very deep and there was no way we could scale the walls. Lucy was still screaming!

“Shut up!” Will and I both yelled.

“Where are we?” Lucy asked in confusion after she stopped yelling.

“Lucy! You shouldn’t have come down here!” Will scolded, “You could’ve brought some rope!”

“Well I’m sorry. I didn’t realise a door would eat me!” she yelled back indignantly.

“Guys! Shut up!” I shouted in exasperation. “I need to think,” they immediately stopped bickering and I could finally think clearly in the silence.

“Will, are you holding a torch?” I asked, a sudden thought occurring to me.

“What? No,” he answered. My breath caught in my throat. Either it was a way out, or something very strange was in here with us.

“What is it then?” Lucy screamed coming to the same conclusion I had. She was nearing hysterics.

“I don’t know! I can’t move can I?” Will said panic rising in his voice. He was losing his cool.

“Hold on, it could be a way out,” I said rationally. I tried shuffling towards Will but it was impossible. There was no way we could get out of this. I cursed but suddenly felt a nagging feeling in my stomach. It wasn’t uncomfortable just annoying. A vision of my knife popped into my head. That’s it!

“My knife!” I yelled triumphantly.

The knife that I’d got was in my shorts and I felt my hand move to it. It was moving to its own accord and it pulled the knife out. With one quick movement I slashed at the bonds keeping me down. My knife glowed blue again and it felt like a part of me as I set to work cutting Will and Lucy out. When we were all free I moved cautiously to the light. For some reason we didn’t seem to be getting any closer to it. I didn’t realise how big this chasm was!

“Alex? Where did you get that knife?” Will asked curiously as we were trying in vain to get to the light.

“Oh, well it’s a long story,” and I told him how we killed The King with help from Lucy who was still shaken.

“It’s you!” he yelled looking at us in awe. I looked at him warily. He looked like he was about to have a seizure.

“What are you talking about?” I asked in confusing.

“You’re the two who is bound to help us destroy the evil that is destroying my planet!” he was very excited. “The prophecy was right! And so was my dream!” he continued. He was practically dancing and I had no idea what he was talking about. Before I could even ask him to begin explaining I bumped straight into the light. I hadn’t been paying attention and ended up walking into it! I know that sounds weird but the light was just hovering there and when I went into it, it was so warm I felt sleepy. Will stopped happy dancing and frowned.

“What is this?” Lucy asked her eyes wide open. I stepped out of the light and it made an odd sucking noise.

“I have no idea,” I said in wonder. I went to touch it with my hand but suddenly it jerked and flew into me! Right into my chest! I suddenly felt so powerful, like I could do anything. Not like before when I was angry but a good powerful, like I needed to help people. I also knew what I had to do. I grabbed Will and Lucy and I concentrated. I started to feel ten times as strong as I was before, and I went up to the chasm wall and started to punch and kick at it. Will and Lucy came next to me and started helping. After a while the wall appeared to groan and creak until I succeeded and we burst through. As soon as I was out of the chasm the light left me and disappeared, but I still felt strong. The first thing I noticed was the suns. They were so blinding after the darkness of the chasm that it took a while for my eyes to adjust. Will and Lucy also came out and gazed around at our surroundings.

“Where are we?” I asked shielding my eyes. We were suddenly outside, but there was no sign of The Palace and no sign of the city. We were in some kind of volcanic island. In the far distance a volcano was brewing. I looked behind us for some reassurance that The Palace was there but the chasm hole had gone! There was nothing there!

“Umm, guys?” Lucy said panic threatening to overwhelm her again.

“Ok, I know this looks bad but let’s not panic,” I said. But my advice was too late because Lucy started hyperventilating and she collapsed on the ground. She appeared to have had a panic attack. I looked at Will and he seemed to be frozen with shock.

“Will,” I said shaking him. “Where are we?” He seemed to come around.

“I know every single place in The Great city, even beyond that! But I’ve never seen anything like this before,” he said, his face looking crestfallen.

“Then we keep on moving,” I said confidently. Though inside I felt like crawling into a hole and never coming out again. Will agreed so we picked the unconscious Lucy up and walked towards our destiny.
