The Resistance

After about a day and a half, green was starting to bore me. Everywhere was trees, trees and guess what? More trees! Now and then we would see some animals but we didn’t see any crazy rainbow birds. Will would catch small animals to cook and eat. A lot of the animals were like our average animals on Earth but some of them had an extra eye or limb. It would creep me out when I saw an animal with an extra eye because when we cooked them, they always seem to look at me, as if to say; why would you do this to me? Yeah, it gives me the shivers.

"We’re about two hours away from the Great City," Will said, breaking the silence after a while. I could tell we were coming out of the forest as the trees were thinning and more sunlight was coming through.

Lucy and I sighed with relief.

Finally! We can rest and eat proper food! I thought hopefully.

Sure enough, we finally exited the forest and before us was the most fascinating thing I’d ever laid eyes on. The Great City was massive! The buildings were like a mix of old fashioned houses; to tall skyscrapers with lifts on the sides of them, to mud houses and old abandoned houses that had boards nailed all over them. It was like half of the city was stuck in the past and the other half stuck in the present. It was beautiful in its own way and I was captivated.  As we walking towards it I felt a new burst of energy and I practically ran the whole way leaving Will and Lucy to catch up.

"Come on, slow pokes!" I yelled. They ran to catch up and we were soon stopping by a building that was small but very modern. It was on the outskirts of the city which disappointed me because I desperately wanted to see the rest of it! The building had a sign on it saying 'The Resistance'. I assumed it was some kind of hotel. Weird name for a hotel, I thought.

"We’ll be stopping here for the night. I know a man who works here and I can get a couple of rooms for free. Then in the morning we will walk to The Palace," Will explained interrupting my thoughts. A soft bed was sounding pretty nice to me right now.

"Why is it called 'The Resistance'?" Lucy asked. “It’s a pretty weird name,”

Will thought for a moment before answering.

"There’re a lot of people in this city that don’t agree with the ways this city is run. The King of Blood is an evil man and 'The Resistance' tries to do everything in their power to make life difficult for him. They don't run by the rules, they go by their own," he answered gravely. "This place never used to be a Monarchy. It used to be beautiful and free," He seemed very passionate about his home and as I listened, I was filled with rage and pity for the poor people of this city. I was determined to do something about it. I had a weird feeling about this place, like I was meant to do this. I felt attached somehow.  As we walked through the threshold I stopped and stared in amazement and awe forgetting momentarily my grave thoughts. The house looked small on the outside but somehow the inside was three times as large and beautiful. We were standing in a large hall that was decorated magnificently with strange markings. There were four massive pillars with the same markings placed in each corner of the room and at the end of the hall a modern desk was placed. The room looked like something out of an Ancient Egyptian movie or something. Imagine a tomb and enlarge it about twice its size. You’re probably imagining the inside of this building. It was also extremely empty.

“I thought this was supposed to be ‘The Resistance.’” I said. I don’t see many people resisting. They just ignored my witty remark and we walked towards the desk. It looked strangely out of place and I couldn't see very well because of the gloom. The lights were flickering on and off. Wow, I thought, someone needs to get the electrician in here. As we got closer I saw a fat bald man was sitting at the desk. I realised that he must be the Concierge. What’s up with all the fat people in this place? I thought amused.

"Ryan!” Will yelled excitedly. “It's good to see you buddy!" I had never seen him this happy before. It was nice, his face lights up and a twinkle appears in his eyes.

"Ah! Will! I was wondering when I’d be seeing you again!" Ryan boomed in a rough voice. The two men embraced and were soon deep in conversation about the past. Most of it I didn't understand so I decided to explore the room a little. I walked to the walls and spread my hands across it. It was smooth and soft; it was made out of marble. Kind of like a temple.

"Alex!” Lucy yelled across the room. “We’re going to our rooms now!" I ran to catch up with them and we climbed a massive staircase up to the top floor where it was just as beautiful as the hall. The fat man showed us our rooms and left whistling merrily as he went. Again, this place never ceases to amaze me. My room was huge, with a kitchen and a spa in the bathroom. As I went into my bedroom I found that the bed was a water one and I had a flat screen TV. A PS3 was attached to it. Also there was a mini fridge that was stacked full with all my favourite snacks. Lemonade and Mars Bars. How they knew what I liked I’d no idea but I didn't care. It was a shame that we weren't staying for long. I grabbed a can and a Mars Bar and walked into Lucy's room.

"Oh, wow! This place is so amazing!" Lucy exclaimed. Her room was identical to mine.

"I know, isn't it?” I said as excited as her. “I wander who that Ryan is?' Lucy merely shrugged and Will walked into the room.

"Do you like your rooms?" he asked.

"Yes! They‘re so amazing!" I exclaimed excitedly. Will chuckled.

"So, who was that man?" Lucy asked curiously.

"He’s a friend of mine,” Will answered, his eyes staring at the wall. “I met him on my travels and he assisted me in such ways that I don’t think I can ever repay him," he answered and wouldn't say anything else about him. I wandered if Ryan had saved Will’s life somehow. I couldn’t really imagine Will ever being in danger though. I’d seen him fight and he knew a lot about this strange place, so it was hard to imagine him actually needing any help. It bothered me that he was so secretive but I was too exhausted to bother about his words so I said goodnight, headed into my room, collapsed on my soft huge bed and was soon fast asleep.
