I look up as Cody kneels by the mirror. I knew he was coming when I heard his footsteps, so I held back my tears until I had privacy. He touches the glass and I look down at my feet, not wanting to see the disappointment I knew he wears. He mumbles something under his breath and lifts the mirror from the door. The world shakes as if an earth quake hit it. I yelp, planting my palms against the ground so I wouldn't fall back into the maze of darkness.
I squeeze my eyes shut and stay like that until the world stops shaking. I open and look around to find I'm in the lab. Tucker's mirror sits on the table and I assume Abby is beside me. I hug my knees to my chest. Half of us are down already...
I swallow the lump in my throat. Don't cry, moron. Now isn't the time to get emotional, even though you screwed everything up. I listen to the conversation outside Reil's voice motivating me not to cry. No way am I going to let her see me bawl.
Their discussion runs in circles. They bounce around ideas of how to get us out but they never got anywhere. The longer they talk, the more anxious I become. I flex my fingers and let fire dance across the tips, waiting for an idea to strike me.
I glance up, something catching my eye. Mirror man creeps closer to the others, setting a hand mirror on the ground.
My mind spins as I try to think of a way to warn them. I thrust my hands forward, fire flaring in front of the glass. I push it aside, waving my arms and jumping up and down. They look at me confused until I point behind them.
Cody jerks his elbow back in Mirror Man's face. As he stumbles back, Reil kicks him in the chest. The blow sent him flying back. He hits the ground and scrambles to the mirror, disappearing in the glass. I gasp, my eyes growing wide. Having a good view of everything, I notice before he disappeared in the mirror, he turned invisible for a split second.
Does that mean Cody can turn invisible and get us out of the mirrors? Reil said the mirrors had to have some special magic or something, but maybe he can break us out of here. I keep waving my hands.
I catch Cody's attention as Reil stops the mirror. His brow furrowing as Reil stomps on the mirror. "What is it? He's gone now."
I open my mouth to tell him but shut it again. There's no point in shouting if he won't be able to hear me. An idea pops in my head and hold up my hand. I begin spelling out that he turned invisible in sign language. I only know the alphabet, but it was enough to get the message across. Cody and Reil both look clueless, but Cameron's eyes light up.
He explains in a rushed voice and Cody disappears. Finally, somebody understands! I watch the outside world and hold my breath. After a few moments see Tucker running by, waving his hands in the air. Abby soon follows. She runs up and hugs Cameron, who hesitates before hugging her back.
Excitement builds in my chest. Cody's hand grab mine. He pulls me through and I cling to his hand, scared of falling back in. I take a breath of the fresh air. I find myself laughing and I hug Cody. "Thank goodness that worked!"
Cody chuckles and hugs me back. "We would have been in a pickle if it hadn't."
I nod and see Tucker and Reil in front of us, standing side by side. The two look at each other and he gives a cheesy grin. Reil scowls and looks ahead, crossing her arms over her chest.
