(A/N):
I'M LATE! I'M LATE! I'M LATE I'M LATE I'M LATE!
I have absolutely no excuse this time. I actually have a few chapters written down, I just haven't put them up yet. Oops XP
But anyways, here's a chapter!
~
I step onto the roof, glad to stand on something more solid than Tucker's water elevator. The sturdy material doesn't squeak as we walked, but quivers as we approach the dragon-made hole. Boards that supported the ceiling stick out or dangle with the threat of falling. I'm careful about where I step so I don't knock any debris down. Hearing Reil and Adeline's voices tell me it would give our position away. I peer down and see the two walking through the damage. Their voices are hard to hear from the height, but they it's something serious from their voice.
Cody nudges me and holds the earpiece out. "Here."
I glance at him and do a double take. "Excuse me?"
"Throw it down."
"Throw it down? I don't want to throw it down," I furrow my brow. "Why can't you do it?"
"Pretend it's an experiment at home, and we're trying to figure out what your powers are. Because it kinda is."
My face grows hot and I remember what Sargon and Naris had said. What if I'm the prophet they were talking about? What if I really can predict the future?
I shake my head, drawing myself from my thoughts. "No, I'm not doing that!"
"Why not? We'll have plenty of earpieces if you miss and I doubt you will."
I open my mouth to protest, but it dies on my tongue. "Fine." I snatch the earpiece and lower myself to my stomach. "But I want you to know I hate you. Especially if they hear it falling."
"Don't miss." Tucker advises with a hint of sarcasm.
I cut him a glare and look back down, the height making my stomach somersault. I hold my breath and flick the earpiece. It hurtles down and lands not far the two women, who had stopped at a window. I let out a breath of relief and step back.
"... undecided. The signs point to her being the one spoken of by Nathaniel, but she does not seem to be the proper suitor." Reil's voice is faint in my ear. I could tell it's the foreign language, but I can still understand what they were saying. "I have tried to keep a close watch of them, but I am still unsure."
"I am positive things will be settled," Adeline replies, her hair swaying as she nods. "Nathaniel is only a fool who lies of power and prophesies. He is not true."
Silence clings to the air for a while. The two gaze through the window at the Lakarnian scenery. But who could blame them? The country was breathtaking, from its ocean to its mountains. Adeline is the first to break the silence. "I waited so long for this. For you to be queen. I swore an oath that I would do everything to be sure you imparted revenge on those who wronged us so many years ago, and finally it is fulfilled."
"You will be queen next." I'm not sure if it's my mind making things up or if it's the distance, but it almost looks like Reil is smiling. I shudder at the thought. "Once my rule is complete, you will be next to reign."
Adeline shakes her head with a smile. "My only wish is for you to rule over the people of Lakarn in your great and powerful wisdom."
Reil does the strangest thing I ever saw or imagined she would do. Reil wraps her arms around Adeline in a hug. "You are the finest sister a queen could ever ask for," Reil says. The gentleness of her voice and the sincerity of her tone almost makes me sick. And her words more so. They're sisters?!
