The Letter by Kehlani... Beautiful song.
Wattpad won't let me add the Soundcloud link so sorry for the giant youtube bubble in the middle of the story.
BTW, I'm not a doctor. I'm pretty sure none of the following occurrences are logically or medically sound but it makes a pretty damn interesting story. So here we go.
Laila's POV
I burst through the hospital doors chasing after Jorden. We both spot Cali sitting on the ground outside of a pale blue door with a slim glass window. Her head is down in her lap as her elbows rest on her knees. Her french manicured, ringless fingers are locked together in a resting state. I drop down next to her and pull her into my arms and she begins sobbing instantly. I look up at Jorden who hasn't spoken a word other than the unanswered "what happened?" that occurred when I first got the call. His face was as close to the glass as he could get it without physically pressing his face to it.
I stand up and place a hand on his shoulder, doing my best to peer through the glass as well. There wasn't much to see, nothing but scrubs and machines. I couldn't even see Chase. "Come here baby, look at me." I use my hand to turn his face towards me softly, taking his other cheek in my other hand.
"It's okay baby, the doctor's are gonna do everything they can to help him." I say trying to convince him and myself.
A police officer walked towards us with a pen and notepad along side one of the paramedics. The officer removed his hat as he peered through the window. "Are you guys family?" he asked in a soft tone. "I'm his cousin" Jorden said dryly, yet concerned as we all face the officer.
"Well, it appears that the driver of the other vehicle was well over the legal limit of alcohol when he hit your cousin." Cali's gasping cry startles me.
"The semi driver saw the accident and did his best to stop before impact but the ice caused the car to slide right into his path." the officer concluded.
"Your cousin is very lucky to have even made it to the hospital."
"Wait so he was hit by a car? Then a semi truck?" Jorden asks in part for clarity and in part for disbelief.
"It appears so sir" the officer nods. "His injuries seemed pretty extensive on the way here, but the doctors should have more information for you shortly."
The officer and paramedic continue to answer questions but I zone out. I can only imagine what is running through Cali's mind right now. I stare at the window and briefly make eye contact with Chase. His eyes are bloodshot and you can tell he is pain but there was also a soft familiarness to them, like he was trying to say something to me. I take a step closer to the door and try to focus. His eyes keep darting to the corner.
Suddenly, he coughs up some blood and his eyes roll back into his head. There are countless doctors all scrambling around frantically, like ants in an anthill. The door bursts open and they wheel Chase away in a matter of two seconds. Cali chases after him as far as she is allowed. She pauses in the middle of the hallway, frozen.
I do my best to comfort her but there isn't much that I can do but wait with her. Wait with both of them. One of the nurses showed us to the waiting room and all three of us sat in silence. Jorden to my left, his hand in mine. Cali to my right, resting her head on my shoulder. We waited for what felt like days. We called other family members but considering the nature of the accident and the weather outside, many people chose to come after the storm passed.
"Which one of you is Laila?" one of the nurses asked. My head shot up along with Jorden's. Cali had cried herself to sleep on my shoulder. "I am." I declared in confusion. "Can I see you for a moment?" I stood up slowly as Jorden scooted into my spot to support Cali. I step into the hallway. "Before we took Chase into the operating room, he asked me to give you this..." she handed me a familiar little box. The engagement ring box. "He told me to have you to ask her. He said not to wait for him... just in case." She concluded. I stared at the box in my hand like a child stares at an unfamiliar face. How could Chase ask me to do this? It's like he's giving up on being able to do it himself. I looked at the nurse with concern of her use of the words 'just in case'.
