Laila’s POV

“With the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride.”

Steven planted the sweetest kiss on his new bride and everyone cheered as they made their way to the back of the church where I was standing.

“Thank you so much,” June said hugging me. “It was all wonderful. I can’t wait to see what you have planned for the reception.” I smiled at them both.

“You’ll see soon.” I say as they went off. June was going to make a wardrobe change and take photos which left me just enough time to get over to the venue before the guests finished up the cocktail hour.

Darren was making his way towards me smoothly.

“You did it.” He said.

“It was a team effort. How did things go with the photographer?”

“They ended up sending over an intern but her work is nice so it’ll work out fine.”

“Good.”

“We make a good team.” He said taking a step forward to let more people past him.

The church clears out quickly.

“Sure do.” I said looking at his necktie to avoid awkward eye contact.

“It’s been nice working with you.” He says.

I extend my hand for a handshake and he shakes it with a laugh. He was clearly expecting a hug.

“I know you have a boyfriend, but I’m curious... If you would’ve met me first, would we have had a chance?”

“Darren, I can’t really say but my answer wouldn’t make a difference now. I really love Jorden.”

“Okay, one more question… If I were to kiss you right now, what would be your response?”

I take a step back and put my hands on my hips.

“A smack in the face or a kick in the balls, whichever I can get to faster. We’re done here.” I turn to walk away.

“I think it’d be worth the risk.” He says as he grabs my arm and spins me into a kiss.

I push him off aggressively and knee him in the groin, followed by a smack.

A bit of blood was coming from his lip.

“I said, we’re done here.”

“I’m sorry. I just needed to know what your lips felt like, at least once.” He called as I rushed out the door.

I spent the rest of the reception staying as far away from Darren as possible.

That was until June got up to make an announcement. “Everyone! I just want to take a moment to thank two very special people for putting this together. Lord knows Steven and I couldn’t have asked for anything better so Laila, Darren come on up here come get a picture.”

Everyone began to applaud.

I forced a smile as I made my way to the wedding party’s table where June, Steven, and Darren stood.
