Laila's POV

Happy Birthday to youuuu. Happy Birthday to youuuu. Happy Birthday dear Laila. Happy Birthday to youuuu

I smiled at the small group of people singing when I saw Jorden and Branden walk in.

“What’s he doing here?” Darren whispered to me as everyone clapped.

“I invited him.” I replied matter of factly.

Darren quickly stood and went in the back of the empty restaurant. He probably went to the office, after all, it is his restaurant.

Jorden, on the other hand made his way down the table towards me with a small gift in hand.

“Happy Birthday.” He said handing me the present with a smile.

“thank you.” I smiled back. “I’ll be right back.” I stand and go after Darren. I find him near the bar. I sit in the seat next to him, waving my hand to signal to the bartender that I didn’t plan to order.

I looked over at Darren who tried his best to focus solely on an empty glass. I moved it away and grabbed his hand.

“I just wish you would’ve told me that they’d be here.” He says in a huff.

“I just didn’t think you’d mind… wait, did you just say ‘they’?”

“No, I don’t think so.”

“Yeah, you did. Who else do you have a problem with that’s here?”

“No one. What’s with all the questions?” he says trying to sound nonchalant.

“Do you know Branden?” I ask bluntly.

“Who?” Darren says swooping up the glass again.

“Nevermind. I’m just overthinking, I guess.”

Darren slips his hand over mine, pulling it to his lips. “Let’s go,” he says. “Birthday girl.”

We walk hand and hand back to the table. Jorden glanced over from his seat and a look of discomfort rolled over his face.

I began opening gifts shortly after dinner. Finally, the little gold box had made it’s way back to my grasp. I looked at Jorden just as I was preparing to open it. Then, the lights cut off. My party guests gasp at the sudden darkness and the murmurs begin.

“Must be the storm.” Darren says standing up, hopefully to find a back up generator.

Cali scurries towards me and motions for me to follow. I excuse myself from the table.

“I was not expecting this.” Cali said pushing me into the candle lit bathroom.

“We are not discussing this now.”
“Where else do you have to go?” she said sassily.

I exhale slowly, avoiding the heaviness I felt in my heart. I’m supposed to be happily movin on but here I am…

“What are you going to do?”
