Song: Neighbor by Travis Garland
[Thursday 4:27pm]
Knock. Knock. Knock.
This is the 3rd time within the past week that the apartment next door has been completely out of hand. I understand that the place is full of college students, but honestly, it’s Thursday afternoon. Why is the turn up that serious?
The door opens and a shirtless guy is standing in my presence. I look up at him since he’s about 6’2. His scruffy blonde hair falls towards his light blue eyes in an adorable way. A Strawberry scented cloud of smoke wanders into my face and I quickly wave it away with my hand. I’m irritated but I smile anyway, “Hi, I’m Laila. I live next door. I-”
“LAILAAAAA!” the guy yells out, making his beer breath suddenly known to me. He pulls me into a hug…. A very awkward hug. “Come on in girl!” Beer breath said as if we were old friends. He draped an arm over my shoulder and pulled me inside his home.
Inside, the music continued to blast, the carpets were stained with what looked like Doritios, nacho cheese, and beer. It reminded me of a frat house. Beer breath removed his arm and plopped down on the futon. There were about 6 random guys playing beer pong on their dining room table and 4 girls dancing in the middle of the living room around a hookah that Beer Breath was now taking hits from; two blondes, a brunette, and a redhead.
Then, I realized that I was the only black person there. I was used to it though, it was like that in most of my classes, which made me stick out like a sore thumb. This was the total opposite of my classes though, the girls were too drunk recognize each other, let alone another person and the guys barely noticed I was standing there. I may as well have been wallpaper.
There was one guy whose attention I captured. He had jet black hair which, for some reason stood out to me. He saw me and rolled his eyes which were a dark blue color. Why was he being so nasty towards me? He didn’t even know me. I shrugged his attitude off, not like I was exactly thrilled to be here myself.
I looked around for the source of the music when I noticed a stereo on the side of the dining room table. I walked over to it and began to twist the knob when someone grabbed me by my wrist.
“You don’t come into other people’s houses touching their things” the guy said with a low growl in his tone. It was the same guy who rolled his eyes at me before.
“It’s way too loud,” I said yanking myself from his grip. “Just a few notches down and I’m out of your hair BUT for the record, you don’t go around putting your hands on a woman, especially one that you don’t know.”
Beer breath appeared once again throwing an arm over me. “Branden, are you being rude to company?” he asked, slurring out his words like his tongue was numb.
“Get her out of here Chase.” Branden growled before turning up the music again.
“Can you turn it down?” I asked Beer Breath, who I’m assuming is actually named Chase.
“You don’t wanna party with us?!” he yelled, to which everyone except Branden responded with cheers and applause.
“Why don’t you show them how black girls twerk?” one guy yelled while making a thrusting motion and biting his bottom lip. “Excuse me?” I yelled back at him, cutting the music off. “What?” he asked, confused. “So because I’m black you’re expecting me to come twerking through the door to turn up your party? I think not. Keep it down or I’m calling the cops.”
I headed for the door before anyone could respond but I could feel everyone’s eyes on me. The second I opened the door, I came face to face with another guy. I must have startled him because he dropped his keys, but instead of picking them up, he just kinda stared at me with a puzzled look. He had brown hair and pretty, sparkling green eyes. However, apparently, he lives here. Making him an asshole by default. I quickly stormed past him and went straight to my apartment. I didn’t hear anything else from next door for the rest of the night.
JORDEN’S POV
“Who was that?” I ask walking into my apartment, nodding hello to everyone in the room.
“Some bitch complaining about the music.” Branden said bitterly.
He was playing beer pong with some of his friends. Some of them were cool guys, others…not so much. Chase was on the couch getting straddled by Alyssa, as usual. You could tell Chase was drunk because his eyes were glazing over. He started making out with Alyssa which, honestly, grossed me out. Her friends Brandy, Cat, and Danielle were drunk too, smoking strawberry flavored hookah in the middle of the floor.
I went into my room and shut the door hoping that I would just be left alone, which I knew deep down inside wouldn’t happen. I stretched out on my bed, looked up at the ceiling and thought about the girl from earlier. She seemed angry but she was still attractive. Her brown eyes seemed to look right through me. Her cocoa brown skin looked like velvet and her lips looked softer than anything I had ever seen. She smelled like cupcakes and when she rushed past me, I noticed how her hips swayed from side to side. I could feel myself getting turned on.
“I guess you’re ready for me” I heard a voice say. Before I could even sit up, Danielle hopped on top of me and started kissing on me. Danielle was attractive physically, but she was a psycho and I really wanted nothing to do with her. “What are you doing?” I asked, trying to push her off of me.
“I’m giving you what you want.” she whispered.
“I don’t want you. I’m not playing this game with you.” I stood up but she still managed to latch on to me.
"You sure about that?" she said, biting a lip and motioning her eyes downward towards my now softening erection. I threw her on the bed and she looked up at me from the bed with lust filled eyes.
“Get out.” I said opening the door. Brandy was on the other side of the door trying to act like she wasn’t listening. Danielle smirked, got up, and walked out. “Can we please talk?” Brandy said as Danielle brushed past her. “Nope.” I said closing and locking the door.
A few hours passed and I felt my stomach growl. I walked into the kitchen, passing the living room. Almost all of Branden and Chase’s company was gone except Alyssa, Chase, and a two of Branden’s friends. I made a bowl of cereal and came back into the living room. “So what’s up with the girl that was here earlier?” I asked.
Chase, who was now a little more sober, took a sip of Gatorade and said “She lives next door,” he said pointing in the direction of her apartment. “Although she might be moving soon thanks to Branden and his friends.” Chase said jokingly.
“What’d they do?” I said taking in another spoonful of cereal. “Being themselves.” He said laughing. “Like you were any better? Blowing your breath all in her face.” One of the guys said.
“What are you asking about that piggy for?” I heard a female voice say. I turned and saw Cat coming out of Branden’s room behind me. Branden followed behind her, zipping up his pants and putting his shirt back on.
“Not everyone can live on a diet of water and semen, Cat.” I said.
“Fuck you, Jorden.” She said flipping me off. “I’m sure you’d like to but you’re not my type.” I said making a fake pouty face. She shot me a dirty look and said “I’m not into minute men.”
“Then why are you sleeping with Branden?” I said and everyone laughed, some more than others.
I finished my cereal and returned to my room. After my shower, I was ready to crash. But for the rest of the night, even though I tried not to, I couldn’t help but think about that girl.
