"Dad, we-we have to tell everyone. We have to figure something out. We can't just let the Ark die."
"I know," Jake replied, sadly. "I'm going to make sure everyone knows."
"Bellamy," I whispered. "Dad, I've to go," I said, already racing to the door.
I made it to the cafeteria to see Bellamy walking out, his eyes lighting up as he saw me.
"Princess! Hey, what are you doing down here? My shift's over, I was about to find you," he beamed. "We're not supposed to be seen together," he whispered.
Oh, that smile melted my heart. "We need to talk, Bell."
"Oh, is everything okay?"
"Let's just go to your place."
Bellamy and I snuck around the halls until we were safe in his room.
"Okay, what is it, Princess?" Bellamy asked me, his hand caressing my cheek in worry.
"My dad found a fault in the system. There's only enough oxygen to last us three more months. We-we only have three months, Bellamy," I sobbed. His arms wrapped around me, pulling me into him.
"Shh, it's okay. Once your dad tells Jaha, they'll come up with a solution. It'll be okay."
Two weeks later
I stared at my cell wall, wondering why they were doing this to me. Why not just kill me now? They didn't waste any time killing my father. I sighed, my forehead pressed against my cell wall.
"On your feet, prisoner," a deep voice demanded behind me. I sighed, getting up off of my knees, turning to face the guard.
My mouth opened. "Bell?" I whispered? I smiled, me heart pounding rapidly against my chest. "How did you get to come in here?"
"No one knew we were together, we hid it well enough," be explained. "They wanted to assign each prisoner a guard, I tried to make it casual that I wanted to guard you. If we're quiet and no one realizes we're together, Princess, we can see each other every day," he smiled.
I wanted to jump into his arms and squeeze him, but I wasn't sure if I should.
"Clarke," his voice a strained whisper, "I almost broke the law, just to get in here with you. I was going to steal rations, noticeably. I-i was going to try and get locked up, too. I lost my mind when they took you."
"But you're eighteen," I said.
"Exactly. So, I had to calm down and think. I've been trying to get on guard duty for over a week. I worked the plan out, and thankfully it worked."
"How often will I get to see you?" I questioned.
"I will make rounds during the day, so not long. Maybe five minutes at a time. But at night, I can be in here for an hour, Princess," he grinned.
My heart leapt at the thought of us being able to keep in contact. And for the next few weeks, that's what we did. Every time Bellamy came by, he told me about my mom or my friends or his friends and every night, we pretended that everything was okay. We hooked up, we cuddled, we talked, but as the days went by, my heart began to hurt.
My birthday was coming up. In just a few weeks, and I would be floated. I would be killed for knowing that the Ark is dying. For wanting to share that knowledge. And Bellamy would still be here. And he deserved someone else. Someone he could grow old with. When he came back in here tonight, I'd let him go. And then I could die alone, in my own tears.
I was holding back tears when I heard the doors to my room being opened. It was time to do this.
"Face the wall prisoner." A voice echoed as my cell opened. The man was short and stocky with red hair, a guard I'd never seen before.
"Prisoner. Face the wall," he demanded again, stepping towards me.
"But it's not my time yet, I still have a few weeks before I turn eighteen!"
I felt his hand grip my arm as a needle poked my wrist, a metal bracelet was put on my wrist.
"What is this?! What is happening?" I struggled against him as he drug me down corridor after corridor. Finally we stopped in front of a door in a part of the Ark that I had never been to before. As the doors slid open, I didn't know whether I should be excited or scared.
The doors opened to reveal my mother, the chancellor, two guards, Bellamy, and an engineer named Raven.
"What's going on? I still have a few weeks before you kill me," I spat.
"Clarke Griffin. You are not here to be killed." Chancellor Jaha spoke. "You have been chosen for a mission. A mission that is more important than words can express. You are going to save us."
"Excuse me?" I was so confused.
"Clarke," my mother spoke up. "You're smart. You know medical and plants. You have common sense. You were chosen to go to Earth." She finished.
Raven spoke up. "I've rebuilt an old ship. It holds four, but this trip will have you two and enough supplies to last you a week. It's sturdy and guaranteed to make the trip and land you safely."
"The two of us?" I asked.
"Mr. Blake volunteered," the chancellor said. "He is strong. Brave. Did good in classes. Good shot. The two of you together are our best chance. If you two survive two weeks, we can start sending other prisoners."
"So if we don't die from radiation in two weeks, you'll send down even more expendable people. Because us prisoners are sentenced to death anyways, might as well be your test subjects?" I questioned with venom.
"Precisely." The chancellor nodded.
"The wristbands will help us monitor your vitals. The ship is wired to communicate with us when you land," my mother explained.
My head was swimming.
"Princess?" I looked up, Bellamy was standing in front of me. "When I heard that they wanted you for this, I volunteered so fast my head spun. I know that this isn't exactly a good situation, but it's better than you being floated. I-i would've gotten myself floated immediately and you know it. This way, no matter what happens, we're together."
I nodded. He was right. He would've gotten himself killed the second I was gone. At least we'd die together.
Bellamy and I suited up and strapped into the ship together, the back two seats were strapped full of supplies.
"There's only food and water for the first week, but there's medical supplies, two blankets, and a few rounds of ammunition. After that, you're on your own. But we'll be tracking your vitals and staying in touch. In two weeks, we'll start sending more." My mother smiled, sadly.
I smiled at her, hoping it was convincing.
"Here we go, Princess," Bellamy said, grabbing my hand as our ship fired up, heading for an uncertain future.
