Clarke climbed out of the shower, still tense. The hot water had barely put a dent in the knots in her shoulders. The twelve hour shifts had been killing her lately, her back remaining tense.
Her engagement ring caught her eye as she entered her bedroom, wrapped in a towel. She lifted her ring, the wedding band along with it.
Her chest hurt as she rubbed them, gently. Her husband, who she hadn't seen in two years, had picked them both out before they graduated so he could propose on stage. She smiled, remembering how happy she was.
But happy doesn't always last.

Clarke carried two mugs of coffee to her sofa, her best friend Raven already seated with slices of pie."Okay, so you have the weekend off, what are we doing?" Raven asked.
Clarke looked over at her very pregnant best friend of over a year with a warm smile. "I was thinking we could go get our toes done and then buy baby clothes."
Raven smiled. "We have clothes to last her the first year or two of her life. Auntie Clarke has spoiled my unborn daughter," she laughed.
Clarke felt the smallest twitch of a lump rising in her throat, but she forced herself to swallow it down. "Okay, we get our toes done, we get lunch, and we wing it? Honestly we'll usually end up walking around the home decor stores for hours."
"You're right," Raven smiled. "Come on."
For two hours, the women shopped around several stores, picking up small things they wanted or needed. Clarke's main focus was paint. She needed something to make the stark apartment feel more like a home. It would never compare to her home, but she could make it more homey.
They bought their food, sitting outside in the fall air, the light breeze keeping them comfortable.
"You still haven't named my niece?" Clarke teased.
"Not yet," Raven chuckled. "It's crazy, I never really expected things to go this way. I mean, eventually I wanted kids, yes. But, the plan was always to have a good job, a house, a marriage, then a kid."
"I know, but life doesn't always go according to plan." Did she know it?
"I'm very glad you were being hired when the lights were being fixed in the hospital," Raven chuckled. "Oh, speaking of, which hot doctor are you sleeping with?"
Clarke rolled her blue eyes. "None. As always," she chuckled.
"You need to fin--"
Raven was interrupted as Clarke's phone began ringing on the table. The number was from her old area code. Who could it possibly be?"
"Hello?" She answered the phone.
"Is this Mrs. Blake?"
"Yes," Clarke answered tentatively. "Who is this?"
"Mrs. Blake this is Arkadia County Sheriff's Department." Clarke's pulse sky rocketed. "There's been an accident." The blood in Clarke's veins turned to ice. "Your husband is in route now to the County hospital." The room was spinning. "He was unresponsive at the scene."
"I'm on my way." Clarke ended the call, scrambling to grab her bags. "I have to, I have to go. I'm so sorry."
"Clarke, what's wrong? You're pale! Is everything okay?"
"I have to get to the airport, Raven. It's a, a family emergency." Her breaths were shaky, she was panicked.
"Clarke!" Raven snapped. "I drove. I will take you to the airport."
