There were some days Kaarina felt deprived of energy. Today was one of those days. The worse thing yet, was that the restaurant was packed today. So much so, the staff at the restaurant was inadequate to serve all the customers inside.
Right after the other, she had to be looking about meals. It seemed almost like she was working on automatic. One after the other. That was what her brain was telling her. In a way, it was a good thing she was so busy. Mr. Vittorio was quite the main topic in her mind for some time. This was definitely aiding in keeping those thoughts at bay. But for how long?
Kaarina looked up at the time as she felt sweat trickle down her spine. It was almost noon and God, she was exhausted.
"Hey, Cindy," she called to one of the waitresses as the young girl almost stumbled over her own two feet with her eyes barely open. She barely heard her employer, but she placed her hand on the girl's shoulder, stopping her from carrying the next meals. "Let me get that for."
"Oh, no, I am-" Kaarina gave her big smile, hoping it was more radiant than how she felt.
"You're hungry and tired," like me! "Just go and take your lunch break."
With a small "thank you" the girl went away and Kaarina took over the job as waitress. If business was going to be this busy everyday, she mulled in her head. She would have to start putting up ads for more workers.
After serving the meals to a couple satisfied customers, Kaarina made her way to the V.I.P lounge. She hoped they did not mind her exhausted and shaky appearance. But that was the least of her worries as she froze mid step towards her next customer. It was him.
Kaarina couldn't believe it. Was he here for her? She noticed that he was speaking to an older gentleman across from him. She quickly chastised herself. The guy barely knew her. She was probably a distant image by then.
Straightening her posture, she made her way towards. Her heart was pounding against her chest, the erratic beating loud in her ears. No, she couldn't be nervous. He was just another client. Her armpits began to sweat, her disgusting sign of nervousness. Okay, change of course.
She was about to turn back around when he caught her gaze. Her body tensed in reaction to the need to swoon. This was not happening!
With sure steps which showed the absolute opposite of what she was feeling, she made the short distance to the men, both dressed in fine suits. Was he a businessman?
"May I take your order?" She asked a little too stiffly with tablet ready in hand, but she was grateful that there was no tremor or any kind of weakness. Being a waitress at a restaurant growing up, she knew that image and attitude was everything. Those factors could dictate the next move of the customer and possibly, her evening as well. But she had to stick on the attitude thing, since her image wasn't saying the best in anything at the moment.
His eyes had snapped back towards the salt-and-peppered hair man with something of disappointment. Kaarina couldn't understand why he had that reaction or the reason behind the smirk the unfamiliar man was giving him. Could he be his father? They looked alike in some ways. But that was not how Kaarina thought Achilles would be in the future. She then realized how little she knew of him. Yet she was so affected by him. It was both a good and bad thing.
"We aren't quite ready yet," The older gentleman told her with a friendly, yet knowing smile. "Could you come back with your finest wine in say...the next five minutes."
Oh hell no!
"Of course," Kaarina smiled tightly, trying not to gaze at the black haired granite sculpture of the world's sexiest man as she strolled away. Kaarina never knew how difficult it was to walk at a normal pace until then. It was as if she was some international doll with every eye on her. Tripping over her own feet seemed so easy to do.
Out of the V.I.P. lounge, Kaarina made a mad dash to the kitchen. One of her co-workers, Lewis, came towards her with evident concern of her obviously shaken appearance.
"Are you okay?" He questioned earnestly, his fingers digging into her arms.
Kaarina quickly nodded, attempting to swat his hands away from her. He got the message clear after a couple seconds and released her.
"I have to go down the wine cellar," she informed him, already making her way to the door for the cellar. Lewis pursed his lips, his green eyes scanning her small form. "Go on now. We are already short of staff as it is, don't let it be worse."
And with that, she opened the door and disappeared behind it. Despite the cold New York weather, down at the cellar was quite cool. It almost reminded her of New Oregon, only a lot less wet.
Kaarina took in the silence and solitude of the cellar, the only sound was her footfall, and then smiled at the quick success of her restaurant. Although she shouldn't be so elated. The restaurant hadn't even been open for a month. Then why couldn't she stop smiling. Yeah, that was because success in the future was so easy to see as now with thousands of fine tasting bottles packed high on shelves to her right and left. But the shelf she wanted was right in front of her.
"He said our finest wine," she muttered as she looked up at the specific shelf that she had been looking for where the finest was at the top. And that shelf was at least twice her height. "Because that wine is freaking expensive."
Although she did not doubt for a second they couldn't afford it. Their suits, houses and cars would pay off the debt just fine with some change left. She suddenly wished they could not pay so she could actually do that.
As Kaarina climbed the ladder she had moved to reach up top for the bottle of wine, she wonders why she felt the sudden urge to impress them. Or most importantly him. The restaurant was busy and she should have just grabbed any bottle of wine, they were all extremely expensive in her opinion, and run back up the stairs to help, but nooo...she had to feel the need to impress. They were from the time her father was around. They held a special part in her heart, yes she meant the bottles of wine, as they reminded her of the happy days with her dad and booming restaurant. Obviously, it was not as booming as it was at the moment for her father would definitely have no time to be with she and her mother.
Getting ahold of a bottle of the wine, she had it settled in her head that she was doing this because they were customers. Not because she liked the guy. Yeah, right!
She carefully stepped down the steps of the ladder being mindful that she was carrying prized goods. There was then the click of a lock and she froze mid air. What was that?
Listening for a minute, Kaarina finally tabbed it safe as no more sounds were made. It was probably just a figment of her imagination. She might be twenty-five years old, but her brain cells were getting older.
Shaking her head, she continued to descend the steps when a sudden awareness took over her. Without realizing it, she misplaced her foot. And as if in slow motion she slipped, falling backwards. She expected to fall and mash the bottle of wine to pieces. She expected to waste time and cry her eyes out. She expected everything to suddenly fall apart. What she did not expect was to fall into his arms. To she his face wrapped in his arms. He grinned at her and Kaarina couldn't help but to smile back at him.
"Hi," she said in a daze, feeling quite foolish, but not wanting to move out of this bridal style position.
"Well, lucky thing I came down when I did," his grin was wider, but she still saw the concern in his eyes.
That got her up and she stood up with the wine clutched to her chest.
"You're eyes are gray," she heard herself say before her brain could process it. He was really distracting.
"I know," he answered, amused with his arms around her.
After a long pause, she frowned at him.
"Why are you here, anyways?" She asked, her voice a little shaky.
"Because of this."
