"I thought you were going casual," he said as she opened her bedroom door.
"I am dressing casual," she told him stepping out in her heeled sandals and locking the door behind her. His gaze raked the length of her once again.
"Kaarina, you do not wear dresses and heels for casual," he stated in a 'duh' tone that Kaarina found absolutely childish. She rolled her eyes at him. "You press your jeans and say that's formal. I know you babe, and you do not wear dresses and heels for casual."
"Well, now I do," she told him as they made their way towards the elevator. "You can't possibly expect us not to match."
"Well, I am wearing jeans," she gave him a look as she glanced down at his slacks. "In my mind."
"Obviously," she told him with a grin before they entered the elevator. Soon, they were heading towards his car and she felt as if everything was moving too fast. She wasn't as sore as the day before, but down there still had some achy muscles. It wasn't too bad though since she could manage walking in heels. She cringed as he opened the door and bent to get into the low sports car. She definitely knew now that those heels were coming off in less than a hour. And they weren't even six inch heels. "Aren't you nervous?"
Achilles started the car, before turning to her with a raised eyebrow. "Should I be?"
"I don't know," she wrung her hands in her lap after buckling herself in. "They can be intimidated."
"Are you intimidated by them, Kaarina?" He asked her and Kaarina bit her lip. She wasn't someone easily intimidated by people, her mother was a different story, but her mother's family could be overwhelming. And critical, especially of the smallest of things. Those small things made her feel...well, inadequate really. She could see why they never approved of her father. She shook her head, flashing him a smile without meeting his eyes. His hand then covered hers and she felt her heart rate pick up as their fingers intertwined. "Are you sure?"
"Is it okay if I say I don't know?" She inquired. Realizing how desperate and childish that sounded, she shook her head. "Don't answer that. I am never intimidated, except by my mother. Not that you need to know that."
"Dooley noted," he nodded, his gaze on ahead at the late afternoon traffic.
"Don't worry, I won't use it against you unless it's necessary."She narrowed her gaze at him, but he simply smiled at that. Deciding not yo entertain him any further at her expense, she changed the subject. "Is Manhattan ever not congested?"
Achilles shrugged. "It's the Big Apple," he told her. "Can't say I have ever seen Manhattan without traffic."
"You know you could simply say no and be done with it," she pointed out with a little sass.
"You know, you could not argue about it and simply take it as a no," he retorted and Kaarina pursed her lips before scoffing. She tried to move her hand out of his hold, but his grip only tightened. She tried not to feel too satisfied about that.
Before they knew, they were in front of the condo building that the barbeque was being held. Who had a barbeque in their condo? Obviously someone with a majestic condo that had a backyard. Kaarina wasn't even sure if condo was the right word to call it.
"Come here," Achilles said leaning over the carousel to give her a sweet kiss on her lips. She smiled against his soft lips before he broke the kiss. "Feel any better."
"Much," she smiled at him and he nodded.
"Good, now let's go."
They both got out of the car, Achilles handing the key to the valet who greeted them both warmly. Achilles nodded as Kaarina came around to stand beside him and he placed his hand at the small of her back. They entered the building and once again, Kaarina felt out of depth. They went to the elevator and she pressed the button for her uncle's floor.
