Back at work, Kaarina immersed herself into her job and was ignorant to all other things but her customers. Although she had come in two hours after opening time, business was going smoothly and besides from some papers needing to be signed and documented, everything was on spot.
It seemed because of the good weather, more customers flowed in, especially families who were at the park. And Kaarina was finally appreciative of the wonderful weather that New York City didn't see often enough. This was certainly what she needed. It was more work, but it kept her busy and more money was coming in to pay off depths, bills and a small loan. She could even start to consider hiring even more staff and buying some new items such as a new full length mirror and alarm clock if this continued. But that would have to wait a little longer. There would also be a need for expansion and the business needed to be more established before anything else could happen.
It was after noon when she realized that her phone was ringing off the hook. Glancing at it, she realized it was Achilles. There was bound to be nothing coming out of their relationship...or whatever it was. But she really liked him. That might not be anything special to him since he had women throwing themselves at him, like literally. She had found out earlier while changing the channels on the television for the staff to watch that the woman at the restaurant had actually fallen on to his lap and tried to kiss him. To what she saw and what the reporter, she only got two seconds of lip action. The exact two seconds she had seen, but boy did it seem longer.
She knew there was something wrong with that scene so she had already known that it wasn't... anything to worry about. Yet she still had to have such a dramatic reaction. Gush, she was just like those melodramatic women who starred in the sappy movies that her mother watched. Even worse, she used to laugh at them. Who was melodramatic now?
As usual, her mother called her a hour after midday, at exactly one o'clock. Not one minute more, not one second less. Kaarina usually found that quite impressive and answered the calls with obvious curiosity as to her mother did that. And her mother would always feign innocence, humoring her until finally delivering a statement that Kaarina thought was way too cliché for her to even consider. But she actually juggled that statement in her head in almost forever.
"Chica," her mother would say, her voice thick with amusement. "By doing that everyday I must be a pro. Practice makes perfect."
"Oh,please mama," Kaarina would groan. "That is only for sports. I am pretty sure it was never meant for anything else."
"If you can come up with another explanation," her mother would reply. "I'll be glad to hear it."
And as if she was eighteen and in college again, she would resolve to the thought that her mother had her own ticking clock in her head.
But this afternoon it was different. Some things really do get old. Or probably it was that all men were indecisive pig headed idiots. Kaarina was just in too much of a foul mood to do routine.
"Hello?" Kaarina answered as she went to take a bathroom break.
"You really aren't in a good mood," her mother remarked and Kaarina sighed cradling the phone to her ear as she entered the staff only female bathroom.
It was just a regular, tiled floor bathroom with eight stalls. The walls were pink and it looked rarely used which Kaarina was thankful. Probably no one would burst in and eavesdrop on her phone conversation. She didn't lock the door, afraid that an employee may really need to use the bathroom and didn't want to put them on a disadvantage. She personally knew how that felt like. And her bladder almost burst which made the whole situation horrible with an insisted upon doctor visit.
