« Chapter 26- Grief »
3rd Person's P.O.V
Survey Corps were now going back to the wall and Hazel slowly open her eyes. Titus was beside her and reacted once he saw the sudden movement.
"Nee-chan!" Titus exclaimed in relief. Levi looked back at Hazel who is laying down on a cart as he tightened his grip on his horse's harness.
"Titus, where's Eren? What happened?" Hazel asked as Titus tried to smile but it only end up into a very sad one.
"He's okay now don't worry. We saved him and I also did what you told me to do," Hazel weakly nodded and tried to get up but Titus stopped her.
"And his reaction?" Hazel asked, emotionlessly as Titus looked down. Hazel just nodded, knowing his answer. 'I knew it.'
"Titans spotted!" someone yelled making all eyes wide. Hazel clicked her tongue and closed her eyes as she saw in her mind two running titans. One has no arms connected to its body and the other is normal. They were chasing two men riding a horse. She noticed the other man dead.
"Tch, those soldiers are so troublesome!" Hazel said trying to stand up but Titus stopped him.
"No! Nee-chan! You overused yourself. Let the other do it," Titus said as Hazel didn't tried to protest. She admit it, using her power twice a day after a long time is really exhausting.
'But if I didn't--'
"Unload the carts!" Someone yelled. Titus looked gazed at the carts and saw some soldiers hesitantly threw away the dead bodies to make the carts lighter. His eyes is full of shock and confusion. Why did they threw away the bodies? To make the carts lighter. But why? Some people--families--will be looking for their corpse. Why would they do such things?
They stopped as the carts run faster away from the titans and they leave them alone. Titus looked away and looked down to his hands that's been curled into fists. He remembered unpleasant memories from the past.
The scene where a titan suddenly pick up his mother while she pushed him away. He saw how the titan eat his mother's whole body as she yelled for him to run away but all he did was stare at the titan with fright. Then the scene where he saw another titan eat his father in front of him and Hazel. He saw how two different titans ate two most important people of his life. His parents.
Remembering those dreadful past, Titus pulled his knees closer to him and ruffled his hair then started crying. Hazel noticed it and decided, as a sister she is, she would comfort him.
"Titus, this is only the first expedition. Many more will come, so get use to it," Okay, if she call that comforting, then yes, she is comforting her little brother.
"Kaa-san... Tou-san..." he paused, sniffing, "will we end up like them too? A titan's food?" he opened his eyes and see things blurry with tears "I don't want that."
"Tch, that's why I didn't let you join the military," Hazel said as she remembered her first expedition. Her impression was just like Titus's, and her father comforted her that time. But now, he's not here. "Just promised me to stay together with me."
Titus nodded wiping his tears.
"Tch, you're such a big guys but you're such a crybaby," Hazel teased but it actually made Titus smile a bit. Hazel saw this and looked away, 'I'm actually thankful Titus is here so someone could understand me more than anyone do. That jerk don't even have senses.'
Finally, they arrived in the walls. The usual murmurings was casted around them. Though Hazel's used to it, she can't stop herself from cursing.
(here it comes!)
A man appeared next to Levi and started saying praising words to him. He introduced himself as Petra's father and that Petra always sends letter to him that usually says things about him. Levi just kept his look straight as his face betrayed all emotions.
Hazel heard this as tears started flowing from her eyes remembering how her whole squad were wiped out, excluding her.
'If I just stayed with them. If I just let the others check on the Female Titan. If I just transformed earlier... I would have saved them. I wouldn't have to be the only one left. They would be alive right right now. I made so many wrong choices! And I regret all of them," Hazel thought and covered her eyes with her arm. Titus just stayed quiet and quietly weep, thinking the same thing.
'If I'm just stronger! I wouldn't have to see someone die again in front of me! I'm such a weakling!' Hazel thought as more tears fall from her eyes. Images of her former squad flash in her mind and how they brutally died right in front of her.
Hazel wiped away her tears and glared at the sky as if angry at the whole world.
"This world is so cruel to me. Why do I have to see the deaths of everyone?" Titus looked at Hazel whose still covering her eyes with her arms. "And I can't do anything to save them. It's my fault they died. I'm such a weakling!"
"Nee-chan..." Titus softly said and wiped his tears away "No, you're not. It's not your fault so don't blame yourself. I can't do anything either."
"It's both our fault, Titus. If we have just transformed earlier, we should have still saved Petra, Erd and Olou. And we could have killed that titan bitch," Hazel said as Titus look down realizing his sister is telling the facts. All Hazel told to him is all based in facts she knows and even her choices she wants for him to agree on is all for him and was right.
"Gomen ne, Nee-chan. I'm a burden," Hazel manage to sit up and put her hand on top of Titus's slightly blushing.
"No, you're not so stop saying shits," Hazel said, looking away. Titus smiled a little
'She sure did became a tsundere...'
Meanwhile, as they left Karanes, Levi thought to himself 'She hates me now. Titus already told her everything.'
His heart aches thinking about it but all he do is click his tongue.
