Chapter Thirteen
After talking to Louis, I knew none of the boys would believe me. So, for the next week, I simply watched Lena - closely.
It was at the end of this week that she made a move.
Since Zayn and Lena insisted on Lena staying with us and travelling with us for the entire tour, Lena and Zayn slept in the same bed every night. Louis, Niall and Liam slept in the next room - two in the bed, one on the couch - and I spent the night in the living room.
It was the night after our latest concert. I had just turned off the television and laid down, watching the ceiling, thinking things through, when I heard a door handle being turned. I immediately made my body appear limp and closed my eyes - Lena didn't know I was a vampire, so I could fake sleep to find out what she was doing.
I was right. It was Lena. I could tell by her breathing, her little steps - but especially the fact she didn't greet me like the guys do in the middle of the night.
Carefully, without alerting Lena to my consciousness, I turned my head slightly to see the time.
03:17am
What was she doing at this time of night? My confusion was ever heightened by her leaving the room. I heard the door shut with a *click*.
At this moment in time, I had two choices. I could either: forget her and stay where I am, or follow her and finally find out what she's up to. The answer was a no-brainer.
Slowly and quietly, I stood up from the fancy leather couch and crept to the door. I grabbed a key card before turning the handle, stepping outside and closing the door carefully. I looked up and down the hall. The coast was clear.
Feeling like a top secret spy, I made my way to the elevator and hit the ground floor button. The doors closed and I heard the all-too-familiar metal clanging in the shaft, telling me my descent was imminent.
I was halfway down when I felt a jolt and was thrown to the wall of the steel box. After regaining my composure, I realised the elevator had stopped. Confused, I studied the buttons and listened for some sort of reassuring voice. With no luck, I hit the emergency button. I had expected some sort of bell toll or alarm, but I heard nothing. Unsure of myself, I went to hit the button again, but stopped abruptly when I heard a bang on the roof.
I stood dead still and instinctively looked up. I readied myself for attack or defense.
Bang. It sounded like footsteps.
Bang. I silently cursed myself for leaving our room and following Lena.
Bang. Accompanied with this bang was a movement. I saw the vent being pulled up. I stayed against the wall, prepared for any danger.
I can't say I was surprised when Lena dropped in. She was dressed in black jeans, black knee-length boots, a black crop-top and a black leather jacket half done up. Her make-up was done in such a way that she looked as pale as death with blood red lips and smoky black eye-shadow. Her hair lay naturally around her face. It takes a lot for me to admit this, but I was incredibly attracted to this girl at that moment.
I relaxed and glared at her. "What are you doing?" I demanded, like a father who had just caught his daughter sneaking out.
Lena smiled evilly. "I could ask you the same question," she retaliated, looking around her.
"Well, I asked you first," I pointed out, feeling stupid for falling back on such a childish statement.
"I asked you second," shrugged Lena, obviously enjoying my reactions. When I said nothing, she huffed. "Fine. Well done, Harry. You caught me. Drag me back to Zayn where he can punish me for being a bad girl." Her voice was dripping with sarcasm as she teased me. I knew she was trying to provoke me - and, unfortunately, it was working.
I growled at her threateningly, but she just laughed. "What are you going to do? Kill me? Do you even know how to get the elevator running again?"
Anger tore through me but I restrained myself. Instead, I asked her through gritted teeth, "What do you want with Zayn?"
I was rather hoping her to be taken aback, but she held no obvious reaction other than raising her eyebrows. She smiled innocently.
"He's my boyfriend," she said, her voice sickeningly sweet as she made herself appear little and like a child.
"Don't give me that," I snapped. "You did something to him, for some other purpose. Tell me your plans."
Lena chuckled humourlessly. "Or what?" she dared.
I was hoping she'd say that. I grew my fangs and hissed at her loudly. I hadn't realised what I was doing until I found myself running at her to bite her.
And then I stopped. Literally. I froze. I could move my eyes, but other than that, I was stopped. I searched around my line of sight for Lena, unable to find her, until I heard a voice next to my ear.
"We have plans," Lena whispered. I could hear the persuasion and seduction in her voice as she continued, "And it would be best if you stayed out of our way. Understand?"
And then she softly bit my ear-lobe as the elevator was once again put into motion - but this time upwards. I heard the familiar ding of the elevator as we reached our floor. When the doors opened I was unfrozen. I spun around and saw that Lena was gone. The air vent was back in place. It looked like a normal elevator.
But it wasn't. In that elevator, all my suspicions had been confirmed. Just one problem: who would believe me?
