Chapter Nineteen
I shrugged nonchalantly at Louis. "I'll do anything! What's the catch?"
Louis rubbed the back of his neck nervously before answering, "Look, it's not a 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' catch. More like an 'I'd love to help but you have to put in more work than I do'."
I raised my eyebrow. "What do you mean? What do I have to do?"
Louis sighed and his words flew out in a torrent that I struggled to keep up with. "I have the spell. It's a spell to put an idea into someone's head and they'll think of it as a good one, as well as being able to arrange plans to suit the idea. Just one issue: a few of the ingredients are... hard to find. No, not find, more like... hard to retrieve."
"Why?" I asked, wishing he'd get to the point. "What do you need that I, a vampire, can't get?"
"Well..." Again, he rubbed the back of his neck nervously. "OK. The brain is divided in two: the left side is the logical, more mathematical side and the right is the more artsy, creative side. This spell focuses on both sides: the left to see the logic in the idea and the right to invent a schedule around the idea. To affect the left side, I need two different types of rock: igneous and sedimentary. But they have to be fresh. So, the igneous must be taken from a volcano just after it has erupted. A sedimentary rock must be found at the bottom of the ocean. However, these rocks could be metamorphic, which would completely mess up the spell. You following me?"
I nodded, my eyebrows furrowed. "Yeah, I think... so I have to get a rock from a newly erupted volcano, then I have to dive to the bottom of the ocean and grab a rock from there - risking my life both times - but having the possibility of them being the wrong kind of rock?"
Louis watched me blankly for a moment. And then he chuckled, "It might be best if you get multiple rocks from both sites, just in case."
I shrugged and nodded, understanding how steep Louis' terms were but glad to have him do this spell.
"OK, so that's the left side of the brain. What about the right?" I asked, getting Louis to move on.
Louis' signature smile returned. "Oh, that's the easy part. For that, I need a famous, priceless painting."
I gasped loudly and almost shouted, "You want me to steal a painting from a gallery?!"
"Yeah. But you don't have to risk your life."
"No, just my career, my credibility, my dignity and my family ties and friendships. No big deal," I muttered sarcastically.
"Harry, do you want this spell done or not?" Louis snapped.
"Yes I do! So how am I to cover my tracks with the whole stealing the painting thing?"
"Don't worry about any technicalities. I got it all figured out."
That was when I would have relaxed, but Louis' wicked grin shocked me and made more than tiny butterflies flutter about my stomach.
A/N Enjoy the update, guys? Thought the story needed more action, so Harry's gonna start risking everything (don't worry, he'll be fine)!
