Chapter Twenty-Five

Louis' P.O.V.

That night I met up with Harry again. We chatted about the rocks and the spell and discussed the next stage of the spell: the sedimentary rocks. I had to send Harry to the bottom of the ocean.

Honestly, this hardly worried me at all. Harry was a vampire; he didn't need to breathe! This task should be a walk in the park for him!

We were sat in the living area in the middle of the night. Everyone was aware of Harry watching TV at night, as he didn't need to sleep, so who would be able to tell the difference between a TV show and he and I having a conversation?

"Well done," I complimented Harry, taking a gulp of the coffee I had made earlier. It was almost cold but I didn't care.

He shrugged back at me. "It was nothing. I'm just thinking about when I have to steal the painting..."

"I'll help you with that, don't worry," I reassured him. "It's not like you'll be risking your life, so I can come with. If it'll help."

"I'm sure it will," Harry agreed, smiling. Then he stood up, stretched and made his way to the door. I followed.

It was time to face the ocean.

Harry's P.O.V.

Louis made my double and charmed the pendant. Then we said our goodbyes underneath the moonlight.

"Another dangerous mission," I sighed. I smiled and jokingly added, "Let's hope I come back from this one in one piece again, eh?"

Louis glared at me, clearly unamused by my joke. "Don't kid around like that. Don't forget how we found you after you were kidnapped; you were a right mess! It was terrifying!"

"I know," I huffed. "I'm sorry." There was a pause as we were both deep in thought. Then, Louis broke the silence.

"You'd better get going," he muttered. His tone of voice made me sad; I could hear the fear in his voice, the hidden longing for me to stay. I felt like crying.

No, I told myself. Save it for the ocean. There my tears will feel oh so small.

I smiled sadly at Louos, and he mirrored the gesture just before he spoke the familiar words of the transportation spell. I saw his magical tendrils twirl and dance towards me once again. They surrounded me in darkness. I felt the temperature suddenly drop.

When the tendrils cleared, I saw the never-ending ocean surrounding me on all sides. I wasn't sure which way was up, down, east, west - anything! All I knew was that I was in the middle of the freezing ocean. This task was going to be harder than I thought it would be.

I first decided to swim upwards, to see if I could get my bearings. So, slowly, I hooked the bag around the belt around my waist and headed for what I hoped was the surface.

This wasn't my first experience of disorientation in the middle of the ice-cold sea. Last time I had experienced this was when I was on the Titanic. Many lives were lost that night. However, I had saved a few.

When the ship had begun to sink, I had tried to help others. I was successful in saving three families and a young girl - no older than five - whom I had found wandering the bottom decks of the ship, calling for her (presumably dead) mother and father. I never found out what had happened to her...

Anyway, as I was a vampire, I had been scouring the lower decks of the ship for lost people. I found nobody else, so I had decided to go back upstairs.

However, just as I was leaving one of the rooms, there was a sudden jolt, and the ceiling collapsed. I was buried under the rubble! I desperately cleared a lot of it, but soon realised my foot was stuck. I worked at the rubble for hours. The rising water in the room didn't help, either.

Eventually I was able to clear myself of the rubble and escape the ship. By the time I was free, it was already settled on the ocean floor.

Outside the ship, at that time of night, I became confused in the water, and got very lost. However, I was able to find my way back to the surface - but not by chance.

As I said, many lives were lost. But the bodies those lives once inhabited helped me find my way back to the real world. I followed them as they floated to the surface. It was horrible, but at least I survived.

So, now, in the middle of the ocean, where I didn't even know which way was up, and I had no bodies to help me find out, I began to panic. A lot.

Thankfully, I spotted a shape in the distance. And then another. And then another. Finally, about ten of them surrounded me. It didn't take me long to work out what they were.

I recognised them from school to be a pack of whitetip reef sharks. They generally hunted their prey in packs.

And I was in the middle of them all.
