A man approached our table with two menus in his hand. He handed them to us, then grabbed a small notepad off of his restaurant tool belt. I placed the menu on the table in front of my and looked up to see the waiter looking at Steph, "My name is Justin," He smiled brightly in her direction and I looked down at my menu, "Can I start you with something to drink?" He asked quickly, not looking away from her eyes.
"I'll take a water," I said quickly and he glanced at me for a moment before looking back at Steph.
She nodded and ordered the same, "I'll bring that right out for you." He smiled at her before walking away.
The table got quiet as we both reached for our menus, "Thank you," She said after another few moments of silence, "Again, for inviting me to your apartment." I nodded, "I don't usually hang out with people from the studio, but it was fun. I had a great time."
"We should do it again sometime," I told her happily, "I had a great time too."
"If you don't mind me asking," She said hesitantly after the conversation fell silent, "Who is Callie?"
"Callie?" I repeated, feeling my heart drop into my stomach for a moment. I lightly laughed in order to lighten the mood, but it didn't work, "She was my girlfriend last year." I told her quickly as I avoided her eyes.
"I assumed that much," she replied as I looked up at her, "What happened?" I bit my bottom lip nervously as her light blue eyes stared into mine, "If you don't want to tell me you don't have to. I'm just curious."
I took a deep breath. There was nothing left to my old relationship with Callie, but I felt like she would always hold a special place in my heart. She was my best friend and my first love. I never thought anything would happen between us, "She just decided to leave one day," I told her honestly, scratching my forehead. I watched as her tiny smile faded into a straight line, "She never really gave me a real reason." I told her. She didn't respond, "What about you?" I asked tucking my hair behind my ear. I already knew the answer to my own question, "A beautiful, talented girl like you has to have a boyfriend."
She shook her head, "I've never had a boyfriend, actually." My jaw dropped and she automatically looked away, "Don't laugh." She told me seriously, "I have my reasons."
"And what are those reasons?" I asked with a smile. She shifted in her seat and I could see that she was uncomfortable, "You don't have to answer." I told her quickly and glanced down at my menu, "What are you going to order?"
"I think I'll get the sirloin tips salad," She took a deep breath and picked up her menu, "With a house salad."
"I think I'll have the eleven ounce sirloin with mashed potatoes and mac-n-cheese." I told her. The waiter approached our table with the drinks and took our order.
His eyes continued to glance back to Stephanie as I ordered the food, "I'll bring that right out." He said with a smile and walked away quickly.
After eating I drove back towards my apartment complex with her sitting in my passenger seat. She turned on the radio and sang the entire ride home. I sang with her. It was different to hear her attempt to sing newer songs that had just been released. She didn't know the lyrics and would randomly start mumbling as she bobbed her head and danced in her seat.
When we arrived at my apartment complex I ran around to open the door for her, "Thank you." She said happily and pulled herself to her feet, "I had a great time tonight."
"You wouldn't like to come in, would you?" I asked awkwardly as I shut the car door, "I can teach you how to play a game." She crinkled her nose, "It'll be fun, I promise."
"You promise?" She asked, shaking her head lightly. She sighed over dramatically and smiled, "I guess I'll give it a try."
I glanced around the parking lot to see that Joven's car wasn't in his normal space, "I don't think Joven is home right now, so we may be safe." I lightly laughed as we walked towards the doors. We walked up the stairs until we reached the door to the apartment, "I'll let you choose what game we play." We walked inside and she followed me to the living area. I grabbed two copies of my favorite game off of the shelf and gave her the choice.
"That's the same game!" She exclaimed as she took both of the cases from me, "This isn't a choice!"
"It is, there are two options." I said with a laugh as I looked down at the two versions of the same game, "Now, would you rather option number one or number two?"
"Number two," She chose, handing me the case.
I crinkled my nose and took the other case, "I think we should start with option number one."
She lightly laughed, "So, really, I didn't have a choice at all."
I shrugged my shoulders as I walked towards the game system. I put the disc in and turned the lights off before sitting next to her on the couch. Since the sun was starting to set the room was almost completely dark, "I gave you a choice." I told her with a laugh as I handed her a controller, "You just made the wrong choice."
We played for hours and she never won, "You aren't even going easy on me," She shouted with a laugh as she lost again, "This isn't fair."
"How will you learn if I take it easy on you?" I asked her with a short laugh as she began to click random buttons.
"I don't even know where I am on the screen!" She exclaimed as her character died again. I laughed lightly as she continued to try, "I'll beat you eventually."
She never did, "Would you like to take a break?" I asked as I paused the game.
"Why?" She asked happily, "Getting tired? Are you worried that I'll start beating you?" I stood up and walked toward the kitchen to grab two bottles of water, "I just need a little more practice. I'll beat you one day."
"So we are going to do this again?" I asked hopefully and she paused. She looked up at me as I entered the room and shrugged her shoulders. The room got quiet as I sat down next to her and handed her a bottle, "I mean, I don't think you'll be able to beat me." I said with a smile as she unscrewed the cap to her bottle.
"I can beat you," She said, slightly rolling her eyes as she sipped her water, "This game isn't that tricky."
"Oh yeah," I said, turning my head to look at her, "How do you jump?"
"You're funny," She said, covering her bottle and placing it on the floor, "I'm not telling you the secrets to the game."
"You don't remember, do you?"
"Of course I remember," She said with a cute laugh, "You're the one asking."
"You jump with the x button," I told her with a laugh, "Let's play again." I placed my bottle on the floor and started the game again.
We played for another hour before she fell asleep with her head on the armrest of the couch and her legs across my lap. I gently pulled the remote out of her grasp and placed it behind her. I heard the front door beginning to open as I lifted her legs and stood up, "Wes-," Joven exclaimed loudly as he entered. I quickly placed my index finger over my lips and he stopped talking.
I looked down at her as she breathed softly. Her blonde hair fell in her face as she cuddled on her side. Joven walked towards me as I scooped her in my arms. I motioned towards the door to my room and he opened it. I walked her inside as he pulled back the blankets on the bed. When I placed her on the mattress she turned onto her stomach and stretched her arm beneath the pillow. I lifted the blanket and covered up to her shoulders as she slept peacefully on my favorite pillow. I looked over her and felt myself beginning to smile. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen, "Wes," I finally heard Joven whispering repeatedly and glanced around the room until I saw him in the doorway.
"Yeah?" I asked softly and turned back to look at the gorgeous girl laying in my bed.
"I've been calling your name for like three minutes, c'mon." He said quietly, motioning for me to walk towards him, "Let her sleep."
