I woke up the next morning with Sandy laying on the pillow above my head. Her little head was rested on my forehead. I crossed my eyes and looked up at her, she was so cute. I lifted her into the air and placed her on my chest, turning to look at my sister who slept next to me. Her being here was confirmation that we were finally safe.
I crawled out of the bed and placed Sandy back on the mattress next to Emily. I glanced at the clock to see that the day was more than halfway over. When I walked out of the room Joven was standing in the kitchen, "Good morning," he whispered to me and I smiled, "Wes is still sleeping."
"Good morning," I told him and thought of a way to ask him a question. He was watching me as I stood there thinking, "What was Callie's last name?" I asked him and he was surprised to hear me ask about her.
"Callie, as in Wes' ex girlfriend Callie?" I nodded and he thought for a moment, "Miller. Why?"
"Don't tell Wes," I whispered, "But I need a good counselor for Emily. Since he still knows her," I slightly rolled my eyes, "I thought that it may be a good idea to ask her for help."
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Joven asked, walking towards me, "She is his ex."
"But she's the only counselor that we have contact information for and who we can start with immediately," I said, still trying to convince myself, "Wes dated her, that means she is nice, she's pretty, she's-" I paused, "I don't know- we already know how to get in touch with her." I said more forcefully, "Now, can you go get Wes' phone for me, please?"
Joven said nothing more and walked into his room. He came out a few minutes later with Wes' phone. I searched through his contacts until I found her name with a heart emoji next to it. I ignored that and dialed her number on my phone. I stepped outside to call her. When she answered I became nervous and started to stutter my words. I asked her about meeting. She sounded lovely.
I walked back inside and handed Joven Wes' phone, "Can you and Wes take care of my sister for a few hours?" I asked him, "I have to leave to go meet her." I thought of the heart that was next to her name and lightly sighed, "Please? And can you drive me home?"
"Of course," he said hesitantly, "Yeah."
We walked out of the apartment and started down the stairs, "So how was Tennessee?" He asked, "Was it fun?"
"It was interesting." I told him, "I got to sing at a karaoke bar and, yeah, we had a lot of fun." I told him with a smile, "It was exciting to go back."
"Why did you move here?" He asked and I tripped over my feet. Joven grabbed my arm before I could fall into the wall, "Are you okay?"
"Family problems," I told him quickly and gave him no details. We got down stairs and we got into his car. I told him more about what we did in Tennessee after we 'met up' with my sister as he drove towards my apartment, "Thank you for driving me." I told him with a smile and we hugged awkwardly across the seat, "Make sure she eats, and don't tell Wes about Callie please." He nodded and I exited the car. As I approached the back gate a scary thought popped into my mind. I turned around quickly to see Joven backing out of the parking space. When he met my eyes he stopped and pulled back towards me.
"You okay?" He asked me from the open window and I started breathing heavier as I began to panic.
"Can you walk me in." I said, remembering that my father had found my apartment.
He hopped out of his car and jogged towards me, "What's wrong?" He asked when he noticed my hands shaking, "What's in there?" He asked nervously.
"Can you just walk me in please?" I asked, "And stay until I leave."
"Let me get my keys," he ran back to his car and turned off the engine before jogging back towards me. I handed him the keys to my back door and he walked in first, "Hello!" He called as he opened the door and stepped inside, "Anyone here?" He asked loudly and no one answered, "I think it's safe." He said happily and glanced at me.
"Can you stay?" I asked as I re locked the back door and shut the blinds, "Until I leave." I clarified.
"Sure," he told me hesitantly, "I'll just chill in the living room while you get ready."
I changed into a little white dress and grabbed my red purse out of my closet. I put my phone, wallet, and keys in the bag, then walked to the bathroom. I brushed and straightened my long hair before walking out to see that Joven was no longer in the living room, "Joven?" I said and heard movement in the kitchen, "Joven?"
"Yeah?" He said loudly as I tiptoed closer. He poked his head into view and I slightly jumped back, placing my hand over my heart, "I'm still here." He said cautiously as I took a few deep breaths.
"Thank you for staying," I said, "and for scaring me." I lightly laughed and he walked towards me.
"What are you so afraid of?" He asked hesitantly and pulled me into a quick hug, "I'm sorry for scaring you."
"There was a creep lurking around the other evening-" I stopped and walked into the dining room area. He followed me and we exited my apartment, "Thank you, though." I said to him as we walked towards are cars.
"Drive safe." He told me as he opened his car door.
"Watch Emily." I told him and flashed him a quick smile before climbing into the driver's seat and starting my car. I shut the door quickly, locked it, and glanced over my shoulder. I backed out of the parking space and drove towards the small coffee shop.
When I arrived I walked inside to see her sitting at a two-person table, sipping a coffee. She was prettier than the picture Wes had shown me, "Are you Callie Miller?" I asked her as if I was unsure.
"Stephanie Kyle?" She asked, seeming surprised. She stood up to shake my hand, "Hi!" She said happily, "Are you going to get something?" She asked, motioning to the counter. I glanced behind me to see the long line of people waiting.
"I'd rather not wait in line," I told her and the table fell quiet, "I know Wes." I told her and her lips parted.
She stayed quiet, "Wes," she repeated with a slight laugh, "Alright." She said quietly.
"That's how I heard about you," I told her, "He said that you are a counselor?"
"Yes," she told me about her business, "Is there something I can help you with?"
"It's not me," I said to her, "It's my sister, and I'd rather not reveal the reason why in public." She understood.
We talked about when she would have Emily at her office, "Thank you so much," I told her once we negotiated a low price for her sessions.
"So," she said awkwardly as she placed her coffee on the table, "How is he?" I felt myself getting uncomfortable, "Wes?" She asked.
"He's fine," I told her awkwardly.
"Is he still working with Smosh?" She asked with a light laugh, not waiting for an answer before speaking again, "He's adorable."
I nodded awkwardly, "I have to get back to meet my sister," I told her, "Tomorrow I'll bring her to your office around ten?" She nodded and we both stood up, "Thank you for meeting with me."
"It was nice meeting you," she told me, "I'm a huge fan; I love your voice." I thanked her and flashed a quick smile in her direction before walking out of the coffee shop.
