A little later, I was sitting on the hill where Aurora and I had talked to Esmerelda, thinking. Jafar had been troublesome to me once, but a long time ago, that hadn't been the case. Sighing, I lay back onto the grass, looking up at the overcast sky. Oh Jafar, I thought sadly, you were so nice once, what ever happened to that nice vizier?
Flashback - Many years ago...
I was standing quietly in one corner of my father's study. More specifically, I was standing just outside the hallway, hiding behind a curtain. Recently, I had heard rumors that father had hired a new advisor. I wasn't sure why he had done that, he always had been wise enough to make his own choices. But being the curious five year old that I was, I had to know if the rumors were true. My father sat at his small replica of Agrabah, nervously muttering to himself.
At that moment, a figure came in through the garden entrance, he walked with grace and dignity and was so quiet, for a second I thought he was a shadow. But he was human all right, and teen at that, he was dressed like father but somewhat differently; his robes were red and black, a long black cape with a red underside flowed from his pointed shoulder blades, and a red and black turban with a red ruby and feather was on top his head. He was dressed so formally for a teenager, that I knew he was the vizier. Father greeted him with a look of relief on his face and he bowed in such a formal way, I giggled softly.
I waited quietly in the shadows, watching them. When they were done discussing, the boy walked off down the hall and with a slight bounce in my step I followed. "Hello!" I said and he jumped. I laughed as he whirled around. He looked angry for a second but then his eyes widened. "Princess Jasmine." He said, quickly bowing. I rolled my eyes walked over and lightly tapped him on the shoulder. "Oh rise up already, I'm not that royal." I said with annoyance. The boy straightened, and I saw that he was a head taller then me. "Are you the vizier father hired?" I asked, and he nodded.
I giggled, and his face went cold. "What is it?" He said, his voice gone stern. I froze, nervous to continue. "It's just that, you don't look at all like vizier." "Oh." He said, his face softening. "Well, I honestly don't know how long I'll be one." "Don't be silly," I said with childhood spunk, "father seemed to really listen to what you said, you'll become a great vizier, you'll see." I curtsied politely, my eyes never leaving his. "I'm Jasmine as you already know. What's your name?" He smiled, his ruby eyes sparkling. "Jafar." He said with another bow. "You know Jasmine, I think you and I are going to be good friends." "Not just good friends," I said, looping my arm within his, "great ones."
End Flashback
I sighed sadly, my eyes now teary as I thought back to that day in my childhood when Jafar first came into my life. We were both so young and innocent back then, I thought sadly, whatever happened to that innocence? What ever happened to the good times we had together, and all the times you were my shoulder to cry on?
Flashback - Not so many years ago...
It had started out as a normal afternoon until father gave me the worst news possible, it was time for me to find a husband, but not just any husband, a Prince. I was only eighteen, why should I start looking for a husband now? The answer hit me like a stone to my head. Because I'm the Princess. I thought sadly. I reached up and yanked my crown off my head, I looked at the large blue jewel with teary eyes before tossing it into bushes. I pulled my knees up to my chest from my spot on the fountain, and began to cry.
Rajah walked over to me and tried to stick his head under my hand, but my fists remained clenched so he left me alone. I kept my head on my knees, crying and crying. I was convinced that no one could make me happy. "Tossing a crown into the bushes, not very wise." I raised my head to see Jafar standing several feet away, my crown in one hand, his new staff in the other "I still don't think getting that serpent staff was a good idea." I said in a clogged up voice. "You noticed." He said with a small smile. With a few steps, he was soon sitting next to me, his staff now lying on the ground. "What's bothering you? You look like you could use some counseling ." I shook my head. "I don't need your wisdom Jafar," I whispered, "just your comfort."
Slowly, I leaned into his grasp, resting my head on his shoulder, letting him stroke my hair. "Father wants me to get married," I began sadly, "he says for now I have time but he's going to start bringing in the suitors in about a month." "So what's the problem?" Jafar whispered softly. "I don't want to get married," I said "I want to stay here with you." Jafar sighed. "Jasmine, we've been friends for a long time now. I don't want you to go either, believe me. But you have to do this, there's no way out of this."
I didn't say anything, my mind slowly processing what he had just said. "I know you'll find the right husband. You know how?" He said. "How?" I said half heartedly. "Because if he hurts you, I'll hunt him down and kill him." He said, tickling me. I couldn't help laughing and happily he helped me to my feet and gently slipped my crown back onto my head. "Okay Jafar, I'll give this suitor business a shot. But only if you promise that you'll still be my friend." He smiled and lightly kissing my head. "I promise." He whispered.
End Flashback
"That was the last time we ever really talked." I said out loud. After that, I became so involved with getting rid of all the suitors that I became cold-hearted and distant. As time pasted, Jafar and I grew further apart until we forgot we had ever been friends and soon became enemies. I thought back to the kiss I had given him, the one from when Aladdin was trying to take the lamp. I reached up and gently touched my lips, the kiss we had shared had been brief but oh so warm and inviting. Aladdin's kisses were always so soft and delicate as if he was afraid to hurt me. But Jafar, oh how I could feel the passion he had.
"What are you doing up here?" I turned around to see Esmeralda and Aurora standing several feet away. "Thinking." I said calmly. "Yeah? About who?" Esmeralda said, a glint of mischief in her eyes. "No one." I responded, my mind still far off in my own memories. Esmeralda smiled, and sat down next to me, Aurora quickly following. "So, what do you guys think of the Midnight Realm?" Esmeralda said hopefully. "I have to admit, it's certainly not what I expected." Aurora said as she looked out over the hill with a smile. "Why do you ask?" Esmeralda froze. "Um...no reason." I turned to look at Esmeralda, her head was bent down and she was nervously twirling one strand of hair.
"You want us to stay don't you?" I said, piecing together the reasons why she was acting like this. She winced and raised her head to look at me and Aurora. "It's not so bad here," she said cautiously, "the villains are a little rough, but you'll get used to that. We could go to the House of Villains every night to sing and dance and who knows maybe you'll find love like I did and-"
"Esmeralda," I began. "Yes Jasmine?" She said. "Aurora and I we can't stay here," I said slowly, "this is villain territory, and we're Princesses. I know you like it here, but we could never learn to fit in here. I'm sorry but we're just too different." Through out my speech, Esmeralda's smile had slowly faded, but at the end it was instantly replaced with a frown and her eyes were narrowed. "So what you're saying is, you won't forgive the villains." She shook her head. "Unbelievable, and to think I thought you guys could change you're minds about them. But you guys are just like the Princes, stubborn and selfish."
The last sentence stung me, I pulled back a little, my hand covering my mouth. Esmeralda stood up and looked back and forth between Aurora and I shaking her head. "Maybe it's not the villains who are wicked." she said before turning away and walking off. "Esmeralda!" I called out, but she just speed up, disappearing into the crowd below. Great, I thought, I came here to get my friend back but instead I lose her. I turned to look at Aurora only to find her eyes full of tears. She didn't say anything, she just shook her head and ran off leaving me stung and baffled.
