Part 11

"This is Connie Beauchamp, 36, trapped in a collapsed building for approximately twenty minutes. BPs 110/80, heart rate 67, was K'od, GCS of 13. Minor lacerations to the side of her face, laceration to the scalp, head and neck emobilised" Iain said as he and Jez rushed Connie through to HDC on a trolley.
"Mummy!" Grace screamed as she tried to run to her but Jacob picked her up.
"You need to stay with Grandad Charlie for a bit Grace, I'll check on your mummy then bring you to see her later, I promise" he said.
Grace nodded as Jacob passed her over to Charlie then he quickly ran into HDC.

"Can someone order me a head and neck CT, FBCs, U&Es, LFT's, Bloods, and let's cross match four units on standbye" Zoe said as Jacob walked in.
"No CT scans" Jacob said sternly.
"Jacob she has a head injury!" Zoe pointed out.
"She's thirteen weeks pregnant, I'm not letting you do it without her concent!" Jacob told her.
"Let's get an ultrasound to check the baby. I'm sorry Jacob but only the baby's father can or Connie's next of kin can stop us, and since you are neither I am doing that scan!" Zoe said.
Jacob was just about to object when he heard Connie speak and ran to the side of her bed, "no scan, I won't let you" she coughed.

"Connie you hit your head" Zoe told her.
"You aren't doing it now. If I start to deteriate quickly then you can do it then but unless there is any real cause for concern it is not happening!" Connie said whilst becoming distressed.
"Connie calm down, I won't let them do it" Jacob told her.
"Thank you" she said as she brushed the tears off her face.
"Connie I'm going to look at your baby now" Zoe said.
"Stop talking to me like I'm stupid! Just because I'm lying in this bed doesn't mean I stop being your boss!" Connie said angrily.

Zoe didn't reply and got the scanner ready as Connie pulled her top up then she placed it on her stomach.
A heartbeat filled the room within seconds and Connie smiled up at Jacob who was watching the screen intently.
"Everything with your baby is fine, would you like a picture?" Zoe asked.
"Three if that's ok" Connie sniffled.
Zoe printed off three photos then handed them all to her, "Jacob can I have fifteen obs please, page me if anything happens. And let's clean up the lacerations to her face" she said then took her gloves out and walked out.
Jacob got the suture kit out and began putting his gloves on as Connie watched him.
"Jacob" she said but he ignored her.

"This is going to hurt" he said as he began to clean up her face.
She winced slightly and glared at him as he carried on cleaning up her face.
"Jacob" she said again.
"How could you be so stupid Connie?! You could of been killed! Our baby could of been killed, I nearly lost you both, Grace nearly lost you both!" he shouted.
"I know! I know I was stupid and I'm sorry but there's nothing I can do about it now!" she shouted back.
"I know, but please don't do something like that again! What on earth made you think that going on a shout with the paramedics was a good idea while pregnant?!" Jacob said angrily.

"I was doing my job!" Connie shouted.
"No! You're pregnant, you're job is to protect our baby. If you can't see that then maybe you don't deserve to be a mother" Jacob said but he instantly regretted it.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean that Connie I really didn't" he said but it was no use.
"Get out! Get the hell away from me and my baby!" she sobbed as she pulled her knees up to her chest.
"Connie please, I'm so sorry" he said softly but it was no use, she curled up in a ball and cried.
He sighed and walked out with tears threatening to fall down his face.
"Jacob can I see mummy now?" Grace asked but he didn't respond.
Charlie looked through the window seeing Connie and sent Grace over to Zoe, "what happened Jacob?" he asked.
"I messed up, I said some things I shouldn't of and now I've ruined everything" Jacob said before punching the wall and walking away.
