It was around four in the morning when Resu had woken up. She wasn't able to sleep well that night and she figured she might as well get up anyway. Quietly, the girl padded out of the shared room before heading to the bathroom.
She was washing her hands when she got a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Resu absently traced the cat scratches on her cheek and forehead. They would heal quickly no doubt, but for now they would be pretty prominent on her face. She had definitely sported worse injuries in the past and the scratches reminded her of those, unfortunately. Resu sighed before folding her pajamas and returning to the room to put them away.
The sun wasn't even in the sky when she went outside. The cool early morning air relaxed her as she sat down on the steps, her head in her palms.
The reason Resu hadn't been able to sleep well was because she had too much on her mind. It was the feeling of not having a purpose that kept nagging at her thoughts. It seemed like everyone else knew what they were doing today, tomorrow, even a week after that. She felt lost.
Before she enrolled at Karasuno, she had a set future in mind for herself. Or rather, her siblings did. Resu was to join the track team and become a star and continue that path after high school. But now that that option was out, she was confused. How would being a manager on a boys' volleyball team help her future? It certainly wasn't what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.
Sure, she would admit she had fun doing it. But she was in her second year of high school already. Shouldn't she be focusing on what she'd be doing after she graduated?
With a frustrated growl, Resu clawed at her scalp. She should be relaxing right now, not worrying about any of that. It was sort of a vacation she supposed. Maybe she would ask Saito-san for advice when she returned home.
Well, Resu thought to herself as she stood, wiping the dust off her pants, I might as well waste time before everyone else wakes up.
She took the next few hours to clean up around the school, sweeping the floors and scrubbing the counters of the kitchen. Resu wiped the sweat off her forehead and huffed, stepping back to admire her efforts. A glance at the clock told her that the others would be waking up soon so she figured she mind as well start breakfast.
The second year was balancing egg cartons on her hip when she heard the dining room's door creak open. She looked at the clock with a frown; whoever it was pretty early for some reason. Resu placed the eggs on the counter before leaning over to see who it was. The person nearly jumped out of their skin, almost dropping their phone in the process, before staring wide-eyed at her.
It was Kenma. At least, Resu was pretty sure that was his name. A vague memory reminded her that they had lived near each other when they were young. He watched her carefully, his catlike golden eyes gleaming in surprise.
"...Good morning," Resu said slowly. She assumed, considering that he was here early, he wanted to be alone. She wouldn't try to bother him too much.
He returned the greeting quietly before padding off to the end of one of the tables. With a shrug, Resu opened the refrigerator once more to begin pulling out the rest of the ingredients.
After she started heating up the stove, she took out piles of plates, setting them on a cart to take them over to the table. The girl walked over cautiously so as to not frighten Kenma again. She began placing the plates on the tables and it was not long before she reached the boy.
