The day started like any other. Wake up, shower, get dressed, eat, go to school. What Resu wasn't expecting was to be called to her counselor's office that morning. Her classmates stared at her, ideas of what might have caused the circumstance no doubt brewing in their heads. She herself had no clue as to why she would be summoned since she couldn't recall doing anything that would warrant a talking to.
Resu sat down in front of Hanazawa-san's desk and shifted uncomfortably. Across from her the counselor was beaming, which did little to calm her nerves.
"Good morning, Resu-kun! I have some great news for you," she started.
Resu raised an eyebrow. Had Mitsurai been expelled? That was the only thing that she would consider "great news".
"There's a spot open on the track team!"
It seemed like everything in Resu's world was still. Hanazawa-san's mouth was still moving, but the only thing that filled her ears was a loud ringing. She trembled. Why? What was she feeling? Excitement? Neutrality? Fear?
"...And I know you've gotten accustomed to working with the volleyball club, but something tells me you aren't satisfied with that. This is what you wanted, right?"
Was it? Originally, sure. All she wanted then was a fast route to a scholarship, and that would be secured with her performance on the team. Her eyes were glued to the floorboards.
Hanazawa-san was right. Resu really didn't feel like she belonged with the volleyball club, at all. Shimizu and Yatchi had the manager role covered to a tee. Why was she wasting her time then?
To her, that answer was obvious. Resu couldn't manage to say it out loud, but she knew why she stayed with them.
They were her friends.
Her counselor was staring at her, waiting for a response. Resu rolled her head to the side, avoiding eye contact.
"You don't have to make a decision now," Hanazawa-san said, noticing her indecisiveness. "The captain said you could have the rest of the week to mull it over. Think hard about this, Resu. Your future relies on your choice."
She stood up from the chair and left the office without another word. Resu spent the rest of the day with her head down on her desk. She skipped lunch, solemnly aware that no one came to fetch her for company.
The day finally ended with the ring of a bell. People around her blended into a blur, their voices becoming one single entity that kept asking her the same question.
What do you want?
Resu realized she had walked past the gym far too late. Her pace quickened until she was running. She hadn't just simply ran in so long. It felt like a big release of the stress she had acquired as her feet pounded across the pavement.
She reached her house earlier than she had imagined, and leaned on her knees to catch her breath. She was not in the shape she used to be. With everything weighing on her mind, she left her bag by the door and dropped onto her bed.
A few hours passed and Resu was only awoken by her sister poking her head into her room to say dinner was ready. She blinked the sleep out of her eyes, looking to her phone for the time. Several unread text messages and missed calls lit up her screen. Resu stared at them for a moment and then placed her phone back down on her desk.
Dinner was mostly quiet as she poked at the meal before her. Hitomi and Kouta exchanged concerned glances at the sight of their sister.
"Resu, did anything happen at school today?" Hitomi asked, hoping to start a conversation to clear the gloomy mood.
