Chapter 1
Maeve pov
My phone buzzes from across the room. I'm in the middle of my workout, punching a punching bag with fury. Just in a bad mood I guess. Who am I kidding? I'm always in a bad mood.
I really want to ignore it, but I know that I shouldn't. When it comes to being neat, I'm not the best at that when I am in a hurry. My black and red punching gloves are thrown from my hands to the floor as I race to get my phone.
Agent One
Right. My boss. I quickly put him on speaker phone and rush to the erg (it's a thing for rowing like in crew) so that I can continue working out.
"You have two minutes before I lose interest and hang up. The punching bag is more interesting than you." I say harshly.
Agent One chuckles. It's normal for me. "Oh Maeve. Only you."
Agent One's real name is Hunter Webb. No one in the agency calls him that. It's always been Agent One for as long as I can remember. He was the first agent to successfully beat his boss at the age of 21, therefore Hunter is called Agent One. Because Agent One likes me so much, and I am almost always by his side, I am known as Agent Two. More commonly known as Maeve, but Agent Two.
"One minute thirty seconds." I remind him.
"Right. I have another case for you. It's an easy one, should only take you a month at the most. You're basically going to be a bodyguard for a band and kill the people that are trying to kill the band members." He rushes.
"Okay. And?"
"You start tomorrow. The case file will be in your hands right about...now."
As if on plan, he walks in and slaps the file in my hands. Well, lap because I'm holding onto the erg.
"Pack your stuff, you leave for California tomorrow. They are on their tour still." Agent One says.
"What if I don't want to?" I tease.
"Then I'll have to strip you of your FBI 'membership'" He uses air quotes over membership.
"Ugh! Fine I guess. I hate you still."
"Love you, too, Agent Two."
With that, he leaves. But then he comes back.
"Just so you know, they've been shot at and received death threats." He looks at his feet. "One of them was actually shot. Be careful. They might not sleep well, knowing what you've been through."
What I've been through? Oh. Right. I forgot to tell you my story. The short version of course. I was found on the streets when I was four. I guess I ran away or something. The FBI took me in. They were determined to make me an agent. I've been solving murder mysteries starting at age six. I was trained to be an agent at age nine. Age sixteen was when they sent me to the marines to see what I could do. I actually was a marine, a vet now. That's probably why I have a small anchor tattoo on my wrist. It was a big part of my life. Now, I'm nineteen going on twenty and one of the best agents in the FBI. I never dreamed of getting here when I was four, but it pays the bills.
"Hello? Maeve? Agent Two? You in there?" Agent One snaps me out of my thoughts. "Start packing. And please read the files."
