Maeve's POV
I smooth out my pink frilly sundress to the best of my ability. It's off the shoulder with tiny pink and yellow flowers dotting it. It goes down to my mid thigh, which I'm not mad about, but it can be very annoying in a time of dire need. Unfortunately, I do have to go on a "publicity stunt" date with Ashton. I have been avoiding him for this entire week as best I could, but that is rather difficult when my job is to protect his band. Ashton was "lucky enough" to be able to plan the date, as long as it gets approved by his publicist. All I was told was "wear a dress", so here I am, feeling uncomfortable as ever.
Actually, Ashton told me that we could take Jaxson along as well. I am actually thrilled about that part because Jaxson and I haven't spent that much time together. He's always with Dave during the concerts, so I never see him. I found a black bowtie that is actually a collar for Jax. It makes him look sophisticated. I clip on the hands-free leash that I trained him on. Since he was trained so well, I can trust him to stay by my side. He still is attached to my hip, so he can't go far, even if he tried.
"Jax, with me." I give him the command to walk by my side.
We walk to the foyer of the hotel room that we are staying at. There waits Ashton and Dave (for security of course). When Ashton looks up from his phone, I swear that I see his eyes darken a bit. He rises from his sitting position as well as Dave. I smile sweetly at the two of them and tug Jax closer to me.
"Alright kiddos, let's get a move on." Dave says, moving toward the door.
"You look great, Maeve." Ashton mumbles as he falls in pace next to me and Jax. I nod in thanks, but remain silent as we walk to the car. Once we step outside though, there is quite a large crowd of paparazzi and screaming fans. Ashton instantly ducks his head and pulls on his hood. He wraps an arm around me protectively and tugs me and Jaxson along. Thankfully, hotel security and police worked together to put up barriers so that we have a path to the car. But, it is still overwhelming to have this many people screaming.
As soon as we get to the black SUV, Jaxson hops in the back, finding a comfortable spot in the way back of the car. Ashton pushes me into the car before him, and before I know it, we are off on our way to a mystery destination. I watch as the trees pass by as we speed along the highway. I see the ocean in the distance; I haven't been to the beach in a very long time.
Ashton, as if he was reading my mind, says, "I hope you are okay going to the beach. Hunter told me that you haven't been to the beach since..." He trails off toward the end.
I know exactly what he is talking about. Adam took me to the beach quite a lot. That was before he passed. I loved going to the beach with Adam, he would always get me mint chocolate chip ice cream and peanut butter cup for himself. We would sit on the beach for hours until the sun set.
"We can totally go somewhere else if you want. If it makes you uncomfortable we can totally go elsewhere if you want."
"Ashton, it's fine. Don't stress about it. I want to go to the beach with you." I assure him.
His shoulders relax as I tell him that. He smiles and pats Jaxson's head. My dog opens his eyes and nuzzles his face into Ashton's hand.
Dave turns his head backward to tell us that we arrived at the beach. He gives me a reassuring glance as he moves out of the car. Dave opens Ashton's door for him; I follow out after him. The sea breeze lifts my hair off of my shoulders as we walk along the board walk. It's beautiful out; the sun is shinning bright and the soft crashing of the waves hitting the shore puts me at ease. The water is a dark blue, which is expected from the Atlantic Ocean. When we step onto the beach, I let Jaxson off of his leash and he seems pretty content with running in the sand. Ashton and I laugh as he bounces around us.
With the help of Dave, Ashton sets out a blanket for us to sit on. Jaxson has his heart set on sitting directly in the center of the blanket, so he does just that. It makes it rather difficult for Ashton and I to sit next to each other, but it is what it is. Ash and I watch as the waves crash onto the shore gently.
"Does it ever get tiring?" Ashton asks. "Being in the FBI, I mean. Working on different cases and stuff."
I smile. "No, it really doesn't. Each time I get a new case, it's a new mystery to solve. Each case is exciting in its own way, and it's a new experience for me. I love working with the FBI."
Ash nods. "Do you ever wish that you could have a normal job? Like a doctor or lawyer or something like that?"
"No, no. I would probably go insane. Something about the mystery of my next case. Meeting new people who I never would work with if I was a lawyer or doctor. It's just having all these experiences at my age, it really makes the risk of it all worth it to me."
"Yeah, I totally understand. Traveling around the world and playing at different venues; it's just so cool. I love it, I wouldn't change anything. Okay, maybe get rid of Luke but.."
We both laugh. Ash slides his arm around me causally as we watch Dave and Jax running around in the sand.
I hate that I enjoy this moment.
Signing off,
Maeve
