Chapter 36

"Where do you see yourself in twenty years?" Michael suddenly asked me.

I glared at him, pushing my hair off of my shoulder before turning to look out of the window.

"Don't mind her, she's been like this all day." Marley piped up from the back.

"Shush." Wesley hissed. "Don't remind her."

"This entire car is reminding her you idiot. We're driving to the game right now." Marley hissed back.

"I'm just trying to distract her!" Michael exclaimed. "Which you guys are all failing at!"

"Twenty years?" I asked suddenly. "I see myself in a house with two kids and a husband and a successful writing career."

"Interesting." Michael nodded. "And what would you name your kids?"

"What the hell? I'm sixteen? I don't know?" I rolled my eyes.

"Well I know!" Marley spoke up from the back again, her voice not connected to a body that I could see. The car was pretty cramped. "Ava if it's a girl and Joey if it's a boy."

"And how do you know all of this?" Mark asked her in shock.
"Because I'm a girl and I plan for things like this." Marley snapped.

I turned around in my seat, my eyes meeting Wesley's.

He winked at me and I felt a smile cross my face as I relaxed.

Truth was, I knew what I wanted to name my kids.

Mason was my favorite name and Wesley insisted on naming a kid Jonas.

Now whether or not this was actually going to happen, we didn't really now. But it was fun to plan.

"Alright, girls, out." Michael said as he pulled up outside of the school. "Good luck!"

"Thanks!" Marley grinned as she squeezed her way out of the car.

I calmly got out of the front seat and followed her into the locker room with a scowl on my face and my arms folded across my chest.

"Oh come on, turn that frown upside down." Marley laughed, reaching to grab my face.

I swatted her arm away, walking ahead of her into the locker room.

I took my usual spot but just sat there with my arms crossed and my head back against the locker.

"Carter looks ready to murder someone, and I want you all to channel that intensity on the field today." Coach said as we gathered around her on the field during warm up time.

A few of the girls laughed but I just rolled my eyes.

I was sitting on the bench, not doing anything. I was wearing leggings, Sperry's, and my warm up jacket.

I hated it.

I don't know how coaches can do it, sitting on the sidelines and watching a team without having any tangible way to intervene.

For the first ten minutes of the game I was silent and sulky.

But then my annoyance got the best of me and I started screaming the instructions to the girls on the field that they were too blind to see.

Marley was playing up front instead of me but she was never in the right place at the right time. She always had to back track to meet a pass or didn't make it in time and lost it to the defenders.

"Pass to feet!" I yelled after she missed yet another easy give-and-go pass. "And Marley get open!"

Marley glared in the direction of the bench with annoyance, but the next time a play like that was set up, Marley was exactly where she had to be and had a perfect first touch to the top of the box.
