Chapter 2
"What's got you all upset?" My dad asked as I cleared the dinner table.
"Today is Molly's last day and we were supposed to spend the day together." I sighed, putting the plates into the sink.
"Well you can go back now that we've finished eating." My mom said as she put the leftover chicken in a plastic container.
I shook my head. "Nah her parents want her home to finish packing everything. I was gonna leave after dinner anyways, it's fine." I shrugged, walking back over to the table.
"I've got the rest of this, you can go upstairs." My mom said with a soft smile.
"Thanks." I sighed, grabbing my phone from the counter as I walked towards the stairs.
"She's taking this pretty rough." I heard my dad say quietly.
I hesitated on the steps, leaning down a little bit to hear.
"Well what do you expect? Her best friend is moving across the country." My mom replied.
"Her only friend." My dad replied with a slight laugh.
I raised my eyebrows. Excuse me?
"Jack..." My mom said, sounding like she was giving him a look. "She'll make new friends."
"What about the Hamilton boy? He's her age isn't he?" My dad replied.
"Yea Logan's in her grade. But he's mixed in with Adam Ryder's kids, not the kind of people I want Gracie mixing with." My mom replied with a laugh.
"Oh hey I went to high school with Adam." My dad smiled. "He always seemed pretty normal."
"He had a kid right out of high school and now they're divorced. Not too normal." My mother replied in her usual judgmental voice. "I just don't want Gracie hanging around that family, nothing personal."
I sighed, quietly continuing up the stairs.
Good thing I was too chicken to actually go out on dates with guys. And it's not like Marley Ryder would suddenly show up at my front door wanting to be my friend.
I sat down on the chair in my room, pulling out my book.
But less than a minute later, I heard the doorbell ring.
I looked up from the book, sort of curious as to who would be here to see my parents on a Saturday night. Not like I was getting any visitors.
I heard my dad open the door.
"Gracie! It's for you!" He called up the stairs.
My eyes widened.
Me?
I quickly put my book down, walking out of my room.
As I got down the stairs, I saw Wesley Ryder standing at my front door with a smile on his face.
"Hey! So like, I kinda blew you off last night and I felt really bad about it, but then I realized that I didn't have your number, so I guess this is sort of like me texting you and asking you if you want to get ice cream? But like it's in person, not a text." Wesley rambled, looking extremely nervous. "Scratch that. Grace, would you like to go on a date with me?" Wesley laughed awkwardly, looking down at his feet.
"Uh, um, yea sure." I nodded, looking at my dad. "Is that okay?"
"I guess." My dad sighed, glancing at my mother. She nodded as well.
"Let me just grab a jacket." I said to Wesley before turning to run up the stairs.
I grabbed my phone, sliding it into my jeans as I stepped into some vans. I sprayed my perfume, probably a bit too much, and grabbed a sweatshirt from the end of my bed. I stuffed my wallet in the pocket as I jogged back down the stairs.
