We walk into Mélisse, Arran's hand still intertwined with mine. The waitress, about 16 or 17, doesn't know who to stare at more, Cole or Arran.
"Welcome to Mélisse, can I help you?" she says a little dazed.
"Yeah we have a reservation or four, under the name Grey." Cole says. The girl nods.
"Right this way."
She leads us to where dad is sitting. His hair is ruffled and it looks like he hasn't gotten any sleep for the past two weeks. But when he sees us he smiles his dazzling smile, his blue eyes crinkling. I grin back and we all sit down at the round table the waitress has brought us to. Arran pulls a chair out for me to sit down on and I thank him as he scoots it in for me. He then sits down by me and grabs my hand again.
"So how is the happy couple?" my dad asks as he skims through the menu.
"We're fine dad," I smile a little as I grab my menu. I already know what I want because we've been here before, but I still look anyway. Although, let's be honest. You can never go wrong with a classic caesar salad.
"So, Arran," my dad says. "Do you work?"
"Actually, I do." Arran says. I raise my eyebrow at him.
"Oh, where at?"
"I work around my dad's office at least twice a week. I help him with files and things like that." he says smiling.
"What does your dad do?"
"He's a private detective." Arran says as he takes a sip of water. I've never heard about his life, so my attention is fully on him now.
As if it weren't already.
"What does your mom do?" dad asks, just about as interested as I am.
"She's the secretary for the mayor here." he shrugs. My dad stares with amazement.
"That's pretty amazing if you ask me." he chuckles as he goes back to his menu.
Arran smiles and looks through his menu too. The waitress comes by within ten minutes of our arrival and we all place our orders. I also ask for a nice cup of ice water. I keep taking glances at Arran as him and my father talk. They talk about sports, music, politics, and every other kind of small talk you can muster. I learn what his favorite music artists are, what teams he's for, and other things. We have pretty similar hobbies and interests which surprises me.
The waitress comes back with our food and soon Cole and dad are talking about mom. I slowly eat my food, trying to tune them out and focus on the flavors. But soon their voices seem to fill my head and all I can think about is how she was screaming for me that night when Cole and I left. Suddenly, my food doesn't look very appetizing.
"The doctor said her liver is failing," Cole says quietly. Dad looks at him and nods his head.
"I know. They called me and told me. That's why I came home so soon."
"Did they tell you if there were any donors?"
Dad goes silent and sighs. "No, they didn't mention anything. She's on the waiting list, but it's very likely that it's not going to happen."
"Why?" Cole asks.
"Because it's her fault," dad says a little choked up, but he clears his throat. "She drank all of that alcohol and took all those drugs. She did this to herself and she knew it. The donor won't be as willing to give part of their liver to someone who is so... irresponsible." dad finishes.
