Chapter 1
My finger hovered tentatively over the play button, my hands shaking uncontrollably and my heart racing as tears trickled down my cheek, I pulled away my hand to wipe my eyes and before I broke down into tears I locked my iPod. I sighed heavily pulling myself up from the bed and edging over to the window, my legs were weak as I stumbled to lean against the windowsill. I tugged on the curtains pulling them hastily aside, my blurry eyes met the blinding sunlight of the outside world, I struggled to squint against the light. From what I could remember I hadn't been outside for at least 4 days but I was starting to lose track. My head was pounding from lack of sleep and my stomach aching from lack of eating, I sighed at myself pulling the curtains together and slipping back into the darkness of my bedroom. I collapsed onto the bed, the silence in the room strangely deafening to my pounding head and ears. I closed my eyes and after a few minutes managed to drift off to sleep.
3 years earlier
'Get up for goodness sake, you're going to be late!' My eyes flickered open at the sound of my mum's voice, through sleepy eyes I squinted at the clock, slowly managing to read the time as 8 in the morning, my mum was still shouting 'I'm not joking! You are not turning up 20 minutes late again, do you hear me!?' I took a deep breath rolling out from under my bed sheets, I walked down stairs feeling slightly dazed and beginning to regret how little sleep I had gotten last night, I ate breakfast in silence, like I did every other morning, and went back upstairs to get ready, just like every other morning.
The school day passed how I expected it to, the people I hated being their usual annoying selves and the few people I actually liked being my only reason to be happy. I walked home alone, my music up to full volume, most likely damaging my ears but I had gone past the stage of caring. I scuffed my feet against the gravel only stopping to cross the occasional road on my journey home. From across the street the same group of boys were shouting at me as they did most days but I drowned out their comments with my music and eventually they gave up trying.
My phone was flashing on the other side of the room, I forced myself after a couple of minutes to go and see who it was, the text came from one of my closest friends, Charlotte.
'Hey Soph, you wanna go somewhere tomorrow?'
'Okay sure but what are we doing?' I quickly typed, the TV was on in the background in my dark room but I wasn't watching it. I opened up Facebook scrolling mindlessly, liking the occasional post or photo. My phone vibrated in my hand and a new text appeared.
'I just thought we could go to the town, you know catch up and stuff'
'Okay sounds fun, just us right?'
'Yeah I think so, so that's a plan?'
it's a plan, see you at 3!' I threw my phone onto the sofa and settled down to watch TV.
I waved over at Charlotte as she walked towards me, we both grinned at each other, beginning to laugh at how awkward we both were. When we finally met, I grabbed her and hugged her tightly, we stood there for a moment before I finally let her go. We hadn't spoken in person for a few weeks and I was really starting to miss her, she had been my best friend in primary school and when we left she went to go to a special school for her singing, I would have been lying if I said I wasn't upset, don't get me wrong I was proud of her but it hurt that she wasn't going to be there as often. 'So how are you then?' I asked smiling.
We wandered up and down the high street for about an hour just talking until Charlotte Motioned for me to follow her round the corner, this was an area I had hardly ever been to before. The street names were unfamiliar and if it wasn't for Charlotte showing the way I would have been lost in a matter of minutes. 'Where are we going!?' I shouted impatiently, she was a few metres in front of me and I had to almost run to catch her up. She grinned at me suspiciously obviously not going to answer my previous question. We walked and walked for around 10 minutes until we reached a large building, I looked at her questioningly but once again she ignored me and carried on walking 'we can't walk around here all day, seriously where are we going!?' I tried again but she had already stopped at what looked like a gate beside the building. She laughed at me as I tripped on the way over to her, I scowled at her and she just carried on laughing opening the gate for us both to go through.
'Come on I'll introduce you!' Charlotte said grabbing my hand.
'Wait what!?' I tried to struggle against her grip, I didn't like to meeting new people, I don't know it just made me feel awkward.
'Aw don't worry Soph they're lovely I promise!' She led me over to where I could now see about 12 people standing, all of them looked around our age and there was a mixture of girls and boys. Before I even knew what was happening Charlotte was pushing me forward saying, 'everyone I want you to meet Sophie she's one of my best friends' I stood there motionless, I managed a fake smile but honestly I felt like a cat in headlights. One of the boys approached me and said,
'Hey, I'm Jack, it's nice to meet you, we've heard a lot about you from Charlotte' I blushed as everyone around me laughed so I joined in, I could only imagine the stories she had been telling them. Everyone started to move away and carried on with what they'd been doing when we got there, I took a deep breath and smiled at Charlotte.
'So these are your school friends I'm guessing?' I asked her, she laughed and smiled.
'Yep and they're all music types meaning a lot of the boys can sing, so you know, find one you like' she giggled and I shot her another glare as she walked off with Jack.
