Chapter 19

‘Where have you been?’ My Mum asked, not with any annoyance but in general curiosity.

‘Oh erm,’ I paused ‘just with charlotte!’ she nodded in reply turning back to her book as I went quickly up the stairs. I sat in my room for about an hour with my homework sat in front of me. In this space of time I had managed to write about 5 lines of my history homework taking about 10 minute Facebook and Twitter breaks in between each line, basically procrastination. I was jolted upright as I heard a faint but powerful knocking from downstairs. It was almost certainly that of a male visitor and with a sudden realisation I was running down the stairs at full speed, motioning for my parents not to get up as I passed them and heading straight for the front door. I could see his distinct figure through the glass as I approached; I opened it a little and saw him standing there. He gave me an extremely endearing grin as I slipped out of the front door to talk to him out of sight of my parents.

‘You could have given me a little notice!’ I exclaimed my eyes drifting as I checked him out subconsciously. He was dressed in a dark red hoodie with chino’s and his hair spiked up messily underneath his beanie hat which I found utterly adorable.

‘I’m sorry I didn’t want it to get too late!’ he bit his lip slightly as he apologised, my eyes had now focused fully back on his face and I couldn’t help but smile at his cuteness. His face was now almost fully healed with only faint bruising visible with most of the marks having blended smoothly back into his pale complexion. ‘Does this mean you’re not happy to see me?’ he fake pouted, widening his eyes as he did so.

‘Don’t be stupid, obviously I am!’ I said breaking out of the trance his appearance had put me under.

Nathan smiled for a moment, and then suddenly started frowning as he looked me over. ‘Sophie you’re shivering!’ he announced, ‘come here.’ He held his arms outstretched, edging a little closer to me. I shuffled forwards as he pulled me into his warm embrace. He was that much taller than me that he was able to rest his chin against the top of my head. I wrapped my arms around his waist as he held me tight, rubbing his hands slowly up and down my back. We stayed in that position for about a minute, by which point I had entirely forgotten about everything else around me, about the fact we were standing on my doorstep with my parents just behind the door, the fact it was freezing cold, the events of the last few days, all forgotten. I smiled into Nathan’s chest gripping him a little tighter, not wanting to ever let go, I wanted this moment to last forever.

Nathan moved his head backwards, I moved as he did to make space for the movement. He held the sides of my arms gently, edging further and further forwards in a state of slow motion. As he began to close his eyes I was thrown head first back into reality.

‘Nathan,’ I said sternly, pushing against his chest ‘not here.’

He stood in front of me, a little taken aback. ‘Oh’ he muttered, the moment well and truly ruined. It’s not like I didn’t want to kiss him I just wasn’t too keen on doing it on my doorstep with my parents just the other side of the front door. I looked at him for a second and motioned for him to wait a second by holding up my finger. He nodded in return as I went to go back inside, closing the door gently behind me but leaving it slightly ajar.

‘Sophie, who was that?’ my Mum immediately asked as I entered the living room.

‘Just Marika, she wanted to know if I could go out for a bit, is that okay.’ I celebrated my quick thinking secretly in my head. My Mum gave a look towards my Dad who was sitting at his desk across the room and they both turned back to me at once.

‘Just don’t be back too late!’ my Dad said seriously, with a frown pasted on his brow.

‘I won’t I promise!’ I had already started to go back into the hallway and started to put my shoes and jacket on as my Mum continued to talk to me.

‘We don’t want a repeat of the other night.’ She stated, referring to the night of the game of manhunt. I shook my head and waved my hand dismissively at her, turning the corner to the front door and heading back out to meet Nathan who was still standing there like an adorable puppy waiting for its owner to come back. Without hesitation he took hold of my hand with a comforting grip.

‘I know where we should go.’ He said intriguingly a smile building across his features.
