Chapter 20
Despite the chill in the air I felt surprisingly warm alongside Nathan; his grip on my hand was gentle, yet protecting and strong. We walked for around 5 minutes, back in the direction of Nathan’s house, passing it on the way to our eventual destination which was to me currently unknown.
‘I think you’re going to like this’ Nathan whispered seductively, his breath tickling my ear lobe. I giggled silently against him as he let go of my hand to wrap his arm around my waist. We walked a little slower for the next few minutes, the sun was beginning to set on the horizon and we had now reached the more rural side of town.
‘Where are we-?’ I started, but Nathan cut me off.
‘Shhh’ he whispered gently ‘just wait and see!’ he grinned, turning his head slightly to look at me before looking back where we were going. Nathan led us along a small country lane where trees now began to surround us on either side. The breeze that could previously be felt was now kept out by the blanket of greenery above our heads and the feel was considerably warmer under its shelter.
In a sudden burst Nathan took his arm out from behind me and covered my eyes with his hands. I squealed as he did so, causing him to chuckle against my back. ‘We’re going to walk forwards’ he whispered gently pushing against me causing me to take a jolted step. We walked along the path for about another minute, Nathan’s hands covering my view the entire way until I had lost all sense of where we were as we had taken a number of turns left and right along what I presumed to be a path. The leaves rustled under my feet as I felt that we had changed terrain and were now walking off the path and into the depths of the woods. Suddenly I felt Nathan stop as his hands pulled gently backwards against my eyes. ‘We’re here’ he whispered, taking his hands away. My eyes widened at the sight of the clearing, the moon pasted stunning shadows along the ground through the gaps of the trees above. Ahead of me was a small river that flowed almost silently in the night air. In every direction there was darkness in the forest with only this small area being lit by the moonlight. Everything about the scene was completely perfect like a fairy-tale. Nathan was now standing to the side of me just looking, not saying anything just admiring my reaction. I turned to him with a massive smile on my face.
‘This is…beautiful.’ I said, almost tearing up at how perfect this was. He only nodded in reply, keeping his silence and taking my hand. He led me forwards towards the river’s edge and we both stood there staring into it. ‘Why here?’ I suddenly asked, the curiosity taking over. Nathan looked up from the water and turned to me with a solemn smile.
‘My dad…’ he started, taking a deep breath, ‘always used to take me out here when I was younger,’ he didn’t look at me as he spoke just started off into the forest, his tone of voice measured and deep.
‘Is he?’ I questioned slowly and carefully.
‘Oh, no,’ Nathan said gently, pressing his fingers against my hand as he did so. ‘I just haven’t seen him for years.’ I nodded gently in comforting reply, gripping his hand back. We stood in silence for a minute, still holding hands and facing the river.
‘You know what could be fun?’ I whispered to Nathan trying to break the depressing mood we’d been put under. He looked at me, turning his head with a cheeky grin.
‘What?’ he asked curiously turning to face me and holding both of my hands now.
‘Maybe a swim in the river?’ I said giggling and letting go of his hands at once, pushing against his chest. He was jolted backwards but he managed to stop himself before tripping.
He let out a mock gasp, failing to hide the smile on his face ‘you didn’t!?’
‘Oh but I did.’ I said devilishly smirking, but before I even had a chance to ready myself, Nathan’s hands were against my shoulders and I saw him grinning as he pushed his arms forwards giving me a gentle shove, apparently not gentle enough.
‘OH MY GOD SOPHIE SHIT’
