Chapter 21
I was plunged into the murky depths of the river swallowing a mouthful of water in my shock and lack of time to react. It was freezing. Utterly freezing. I tried to scream out but I was still below the water so I only ended up getting more of it in my mouth. My eyes blurred as I tried to look around me in a state of panic, a ripple of waves rushed over me pushing me slightly up the river. Suddenly I felt a hand grip my arm tightly, Nathan was looking straight at me his eyes wide and face losing colour. I tried reaching for his hand as I struggled to get above the water. Nathan grabbed my wrist of my held out arm and began kicking his legs in alarm. I was now in a state of complete confusion and totally terrified. Nathan held my wrist so incredibly tightly I swear he could have pulled it off if he had wanted to. I watched him, now losing the ability to move out of fear and coldness mixed into an awful blend. His head disappeared out of sight and I was finding it hard to think straight.
In the blink of an eye Nathan tugged me above the surface; I began to choke uncontrollably, kicking and flailing my limbs desperately. Nathan took hold of my waist as I continued to cough, spluttering and spraying water all over him. I managed a quick glance at his face which was pale and a shadow of its normal look. He looked truly scared. He momentarily took one hand away to pull on the river’s edge. His hand held it for a second but the dirt collapsed beneath his grip. ‘Sophie…I… need… you…to’ Nathan panted, his speech slurred and disjointed, ‘hold…my…waist’ he finally got out. Using all of my energy I obeyed his order, doing one big kick and wrapping my arms firmly around his waist. He swam forwards slowly advancing towards the side of the river and dragging me in tow. I struggled to keep my head above the water as he did so, starting to lose hope and faith in myself. Myself but not Nathan, he would do anything possible to save me and that was clear. I looked up from my resting place against his back to see that he had managed to successfully grab the side. At that moment he whipped round to look at me.
‘GRAB THE SIDE NOW’ He shouted in one quick burst, using every ounce of energy he had left. Once again I obeyed him taking one hand out from under his chest where I had been holding and reaching for the side of the river. As soon as he saw me grab it he scrambled out onto the river bank, kicking his leg up and pulling along the grass with his arms. He rolled over onto his knees and pulled both of my wrists lifting me slightly up. What I hadn’t noticed in the deluge of water is that I was now crying. Tears were openly flowing from my eyes. I gripped onto his wrists as he did on mine and kicked to try and get out of the water. Finally after a few seconds of struggle he was able to lift me onto the bank and successfully lie me on my back. I sat up instinctively as I spat out a mouthful of water onto the grass. I was close to having a panic attack as Nathan kneeled in front of me waving his hands in front of my eyes as they must have been wandering. ‘Sophie talk to me, are you okay?’ Nathan was breathing heavily and looked me directly in the eyes. I nodded quickly after a short pause. He took a giant sigh of relief. ‘Oh my god I’m so sorry’ he said collapsing just to the side of me and putting his arm over my shoulder.
‘Not the time for that Nathan’ I whispered quietly, almost inaudibly, saying my first words since I had fallen into the water.
‘Sorry.’ He apologised again and I gave a gentle shake of the head.
‘Please don’t be.’ As we were talking I had failed to notice the proximity of our faces with each other and consequently those were the last words that were spoken as our lips collided, whether either of us had intended to kiss I’m still not sure. It just seemed to, happen. We both had to pull away regularly to take a breath and we were shaking constantly, our wet skin and clothes touching. It was possibly the least romantic moment yet most romantic thing that I could have ever imagined happening and as it was happening I honestly couldn’t believe it. Nathan moved in front of me and took a hold of my shoulders lifting me back up off the ground, our lips parting for that moment. He went back in to kiss me again, our eyes meeting for the first time and that’s when I saw it. That look. An indescribable look that portrayed so many complex emotions yet I knew exactly what he meant by it. I had no time to think though as he once again pressed his lips against mine. His right hand trailed my spine a few times and I suddenly felt his hand touch my bare skin beneath the back of my shirt. He pushed it up a little and I gasped, partly for air and partly in shock pulling away from his lips. He stopped in that moment as our eyes met again and whispered nearly silently.
‘I love you Sophie’
