Chapter 6
The school week passed without any notable events, I managed to make up with everyone and I apologised for leaving so abruptly at lunch. The subject of Nathan was practically off limits and my friends avoided it like the plague so in theory I should have been able to forget about him for a while but the sad fact is that I really couldn't. When I did forget for a while I would end up seeing or hearing something that would remind me of him. I'd only known him for a few days but at the moment he was already taking over my life.
'I hope you haven't forgotten about tonight! Oh and I forgot to tell you, dress up' she ended the text with a wink face, Great. Now that means spending ages choosing what to wear and getting ready. What fun. The struggles of being a teenage girl. I left for school and the entire day was spent thinking about what was happening tonight. I didn't have a clue what I was getting myself in for and judging by the events of Sunday night I wasn't sure whether I should be happy about it.
8:45pm
The radio was blasting as I rushed around my room trying to get ready in time. I'd already tried on three dresses and two other outfit combinations and I seriously couldn't decide on any of them. I laid them out on my sofa judging each one. I finally decided on a red skater dress with small flowers scattered over it, I grabbed the hair straighteners and quickly ran them through my shoulder length brown hair. I put on a layer of red lipgloss and touched up the rest of my make up. I was standing in front of the mirror checking my appearance when a text came through on my phone. I looked over at the clock 8:56pm it read, I'm going to be late! I picked up my bag and stomped down the stairs shouting to my Mum on the way out 'bye Mum! I'm going out!' She replied something along the lines of
'okay, be back before 11!' Or at least that's what I heard as I slammed the door shut. I opened the text from an irritable Charlotte.
'Sophie! Where are you!?' It read. I walked quickly, replying to her message as I walked.
'On my way, sorry!' I picked up the pace my dress blowing in the wind. It was almost pitch black as it was mid autumn, I could only see where I was going from the couple of street lamps that lined the country lanes. I finally reached the school at about 10 past 9, as I did Sophie sent me another message.
'It's about to start, hurry up cause I've saved you a seat!' A seat!? What did I need a seat for? I looked up from my phone to find my answer. A banner hung above the school entrance read... 'Autumn concert - from 9pm'
I walked into the school, it was dark in the main hall, someone came up to me asking for my ticket and I quickly took out 5 pounds from my purse as I could see advertised on the posters hanging around the school. They handed me a small piece of paper and I nodded and replied 'thanks' to them through the darkness. I crept down the aisle between the chairs to try and find Charlotte, I finally found her in the second row and she motioned for me to come and join her.
'Your dress is so nice!' She said as I sat beside her. I smiled in return and said
'So, concert ey?' She grinned at me.
'Surprise!' the stage in front of us was being set and everyone was talking to each other as they waited for the concert to start. 'I'm not performing at this one though, but a lot of my-' she quickly corrected herself '-our friends are!
'Does that mean?' I almost didn't need to ask but I wanted to pretend that I wasn't completely obsessed and that I was just genuinely curious.
'Yes, he's performing' she nudged me on the arm 'you really like him don't you?' I didn't have to answer because at that point someone walked out onto the stage. A woman stood at the microphone positioned at the centre of the stage. She tapped it to get everyone's attention.
'Good evening everyone and welcome to our Autumn concert' she carried on talking at the front but I was distracted by the movement behind the curtain at the corner of the stage. Someone peeked their head out and I recognised them as Danny from the other day. He gave a discrete wave in our direction and I grinned back at him nudging Charlotte to show her he was there. She waved back smiling. Suddenly the lights dimmed and spotlights were set on the stage.
I actually ended up really enjoying myself at the concert. Every time someone that we knew came on we would be cheering and clapping like crazy and it was great fun. All of them were so talented, I was actually a little jealous. It was around 10pm when Charlotte turned to me and said 'are you ready?' She tried to wink at me but it failed. I started laughing at her.
'You can't wink!'
'Not the point' she grumbled. My laughing was silenced by the next announcement.
'Ladies and gentlemen please welcome to the stage, Nathan Sykes'
