I would suggest listening to Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls whilst reading this chapter or at least have it in your head! The Wanted's cover would work all the same :p I think it really adds to the effect of it!
Thanks for reading!
Chapter 7
Nathan walked onto the stage, he didn't look into the crowd he just kept a focused look as he headed for the piano which was sat on the stage. He looked so good I had to admit, he was wearing jeans and a black shirt with his hair jelled so it was slightly spiky. He sat at the piano stool and silence fell upon the room, you could hear a pin drop.
His fingers slowly began to press the keys. When you listen to music it's hard to explain how you're feeling but I had one word for Nathan's playing the second he started 'stunned', I was completely stunned. As he began to play the chords for the intro of the song I suddenly recognised it. I got a little over excited nudging Charlotte and whispering 'I love this song so much!' With a huge grin that I actually missed when he started singing, I quickly turned to the front, staring in awe as I listened.
'And I'd give up forever to touch you'
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow' his fingers caressed the keys as he sang in unison with the notes.
'You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be'
'And I don't wanna go home right now' the words escaped his lips effortlessly each subsequent note as beautiful as the last. The sound passed through my ears as what could only be described as liquid gold, I was completely lost in his words and the notes that accompanied them.
'And all I can taste is this moment'
'And all I can breathe is your life' the entire audience was in a state of stillness, not one persons eyes wasn't focused towards Nathan as he continued.
'When sooner or later it's over' his voice now almost as quiet as a whisper but could still be heard throughout the hall.
'I just don't wanna miss you tonight' the notes he played began to grow in intensity and he sat up a little straighter on the piano stool.
'And I don't want the world to see me' it was almost as if a silent gasp could be heard in all the hall as the power in his voice grew.
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand' his soulful voice belted out across the crowd. Everyone gripped by the music and emotion it portrayed.
'When everything's made to be broken'
'I just want you to know who I am' my eyes had a layer of tears that coated them as I intently listened. He played the next few notes more slowly sitting backwards slightly with less movement in his hands. For the next chorus I watched him closely, his expression, his movements.
'And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming'
'Or the moment of truth in your lies' his eyes were fixed upon the piano, not once during the song did he look towards the audience.
'When everything feels like the movies' I could sense the next line, the build up to it was intense as Nathan could be seen to take a short sharp breath in preparation.
'Yeah you bleed just to know you're alive' he belted out, this time the gasp from the crowd could be heard and I tensed up in my seat as Nathan pounded at the keys for the chorus.
'And I don't want the world to see me'
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand'
'When everything's made to be broken'
'I just want you to know who I am' he repeated the chorus three times as in the original song. By this point I was past listening to the words and more stuck in the moment, I couldn't move my eyes away from Nathan as he sang, as he played, it was almost enchanting. In all honesty I felt like the only person in the room at the time, as if he was singing solely at me, for me. Or at least that's what I wanted to believe, deep down.
Between each chorus he played the piano with passion, the notes swirling in the air and hitting my ears with power and emotion. Whether or not there was any truth in his words was irrelevant as I believed every second. I had a feeling in my chest that was indescribable, you only know how it feels when you actually feel it, experience it for yourself.
'I just want you to know who I am' he had almost stopped playing the piano now, only chords slowly to add to the atmosphere. For a lot of the performance he had closed his eyes, getting lost in the song.
'I just want you to know who I am' he let his hands come to a stop as he prepared to end the song.
'I just want-' he paused momentarily dragging out the note '-you to know' silence fell upon the room 'who I am' the final note lingered in the air as he lowered his head momentarily biting his lip, if I looked closely I would have sworn there was a tear in his eye. Everything was still for a moment, a second of complete shock amongst those assembled.
Someone began to clap signalling for the hall to erupt into applause. A few people stood up as Nathan got to his feet giving a shy bow towards the audience. My mouth must have been wide open as Charlotte had to give me a quick shake. 'You chose a good one ey?' She giggled. I scarcely managed a nod in her direction as I watched Nathan leave the stage.
