Chapter 23
'Babe?' His voice echoed in my head but I ignored it, unaware of my surroundings. Seconds later I heard it again 'babe?' I slowly drifted out of my unconscious state to see Nathan sitting at my feet. I instinctively lifted my hand up to rub my eyes but as I did so had a moment of panicked realisation. I was still in his house. My immediate reaction was to look at the time, the clock hanging on the wall read 10:15pm. Oh dear.
'Nathan,' I said quietly, Nathan nodded sweetly.
'Yeah babe?'
'I don't want to sound rude but...why am I still here?' Nathan looked at me amused.
'You fell asleep, you're cute when you sleep.' He smirked creepily leaning towards me but only managed to keep it up for a couple of seconds before he burst out laughing at his own joke.
'Do you do that a lot?' I asked, sitting up a bit.
'Do what?' He said innocently.
'Laugh at your own awful attempts to be funny?' I desperately tried to say it with a straight face but my voice broke into laughter at the end.
'That was uncalled for,' He pouted, turning away like a child. I giggled sitting up properly my eyes starting to become less blurry.
'Wait does my mum know I'm here!?' I asked worried.
'Yeah don't worry I told her everything,' he smirked and I shot him a glare, 'okay not everything.' He laughed again standing up and grabbing my hand.
'Come on, before you go I want to show you something.' He pulled at my hand and I got up keeping hold of it as he walked me into the other room. My eyes set sight on the piano sitting there as it had been a few days earlier when I had last been here.
'I want you to play it again' he whispered gently holding my shoulders as I sat at the bench.
'But I can't-' I started but he stopped me quickly,
'You will I promise, just try.'
I laid my finger down onto what I remembered to be the first key of the sequence, reluctant to press it for fear of getting it wrong.
'You need to be confident in yourself' I resisted arguing against him and pressed down slowly on the key with my forefinger. As I did so it began to flood back. The next two keys came to me immediately, the notes and their sound reviving themselves in my brain but as I got to the next note my mind went blank and I panicked pressing on the wrong key and breaking the sequence.
'Take it slow.' His voice was calming and his deeper tone relaxed me. If you'd have told me what happened next was going to happen earlier then I would up never have believed it but after my first initial slip up I was able to play the entire sequence over and over without mistake. Nathan smirked at me as he watched but not an 'I told you so' smirk, rather a smirk that showed pride and, if I wasn't mistaken, love.
It's a strange thing, Love. When it grips you so tight it's as if nothing else in the world exists. When you're so caught up in the moment, in that one second you feel so free, so inexplicably happy that anything bad is the last thing in your mind, the last thing you expect.
'Sophie!' Nathan voice resonated against my ear. I snapped quickly and suddenly back into reality as he shouted my name.
'What' I blurted out in panic to realise that my hands had moved from the piano and I was sitting in a total state of stillness.
'Are you okay?' He asked worried, turning me gently towards him with a soft touch of my arm. We locked eyes and I nodded although my racing heartbeat and sweaty palms would suggest otherwise. I was completely shocked as he suddenly took a hold of my hands, stroking them slowly. He looked at me, our eyes never left each other's and the moment dragged and lingered as if time was standing still.
'Stay here' he suddenly announced, letting go of my hands and breaking the tension as he backed away from the bench, motioning for me to keep seated. I fidgeted as he went out of the room, bounding up the stairs like an excited puppy and he returned minutes later with the expression of one. He held in his hand a small black object which he gripped tightly as if his life depended on it.
'I don't usually do this, but,' he stopped for a second looking down at what I could now see to be a small memory stick in his hands. 'I want you to have it, just,' although he wasn't crying his voice had the tone and crackle of someone who had been, 'take good care of it.' My head told me to ask what it was but as Nathan laid the small object down in my hands words seemed to fail me. He cupped my hands tightly for a hesitant second he only stared then seeming sure of his decision he kissed the top of my knuckles and slowly let go.
