Chapter 17
'Soooo? You, Nathan?' My heart sank as I read the text. What should I tell her? I'd spent the entire morning laying in bed, not having the desire or any reason to move, it was nearly midday. It wasn't as if I'd even managed to get a lot of sleep, far from it. I didn't reply, only found a small amount of energy to finally get up. For the rest of the day I had no idea what to do with myself, throughout the day I received a number of phone calls from Charlotte, each one I ignored, not feeling ready to talk about it yet.
It was raining outside and the sky was dull, grey and coated with clouds. The constant patter on the windows was soothing to my ears as I leant against the windowsill staring out into the bleakness. At that moment my phone began to ring. I looked over across the room to see it gently vibrating on the desk, I felt like I was ready to talk now. as I unlocked my phone I was shocked at what I saw. It wasn't Charlotte calling. It was Nathan. I had a moment of panic as I just watched the screen as it rang in my hand. It continued to ring and I eventually managed to pick up.
'Babe?' Nathan's voice was deep and a little croaky, whether out of illness or not I wasn't entirely sure. I stayed silent for a moment listening to his steady breathing. He tried again 'Sophie please' he pleaded gently almost in a whisper. I could just see his face in my mind, the cute way he would frown and pout, a face you couldn't ignore.
'Nathan,' I started, taking a deep breath, 'please don't hate me' He obviously hadn't been expecting me to say that.
'What! why on earth would I hate you!?' He exclaimed.
'I-I don't know...it's just-just that I walked out on you and I wouldn't listen...' I stuttered, my voice breaking as I spoke.
'Well I definitely don't hate you, who could hate someone as cute as you' he said it rather as a statement than a question with a cheeky edge to his voice. I couldn't control the smile that appeared on my face.
'So we're okay?' Nathan continued sounding considerably perkier with the croak in his voice almost gone. I nodded instinctively but realised that he couldn't see me.
'Yes!' I announced happily followed by a quiet giggle.
'Good, I was hoping you would say that!' he said, 'right I'd better go, I will text you!' The line went dead as he hung up. I lowered the phone slowly, a grin pasted across my face.
The next day I texted Charlotte before school letting her know what had happened although I didn't fill in all of the details as you can imagine and I sort of bent the truth a little pretending that I had been out all day so I couldn't take her calls or answer her texts. Just as I was about to leave I received a text, from Nathan.
'Morning beautiful!! Hope you have a good day! Xx' my day had been made before it had even started. My reply was short, sweet and completely truthful.
'I love you! Xx'
