Chapter 10

I desperately fumbled for my phone, my hands had suddenly become sweaty and I felt a rush of heat through me in the cold night air. The men were loitering over by the tree and hadn't yet moved any closer however I was feeling extremely uncomfortable with their presence. I texted Nathan asking where he was and got up from the bench choosing one on the other side of the park out of sight from the unexpected visitors, I didn't make eye contact with either of them but I could feel their beady eyes upon me as I crossed the park. I managed a quick glance at them as they were talking to each other, they must have been around 19 years old dressed in dark clothing and both with their hoods up above their heads hiding the majority of their faces.

I sat in the park for about another 10 minutes, the men still lingered there and although I couldn't see them I could hear them rustling and their dreary tones as they spoke. Nathan hadn't yet replied and it was already nearly 10 past 8. I heard a rustling of the leaves which increased steadily in loudness, the men must be walking towards me. I held my breath, trying to stay calm an reassure myself that they were not going to bother me. As they appeared out from the shadows it was clear from their mannerisms that they were drunk, completely and utterly. I immediately felt unsafe as they stumbled across the park, they were speaking incredibly loudly but I couldn't understand a word of it through the slurring. One of them shouted something and I was certain it was in my direction, I wasn't looking at them but when he spoke again I could just understand him,

'Hel-lo l-o-vely' I turned my head away as he came uncomfortably close, his strongly scented breathe wafting over me. At this point I wanted to get up and run away but it was clear to me that I had missed the window for that a long time ago. He tried to sit on the bench beside me but as he did he fell slightly and had to grab the arm of the bench. The other man was standing a couple of metres away, he looked at me as I looked up at him, we made eye contact for a moment but both looked away very quickly. The first man began to move closer to me, he put his hand out placing it on my knee. I jerked away from him in panic. My throat was dry as I tried to speak, I wanted to shout out for help but the words failed me.

'HEY!' All three of us were shocked by the noise, it caused me to jump up from the bench in surprise moving the man's arm from off of me as I whipped around to see Nathan standing there by the gate. I felt a great sense of relief and almost thankfulness to see his friendly face smiling at me. 'Come over here Sophie' he said, motioning with his arms. I didn't hesitate to leave the two men who didn't seem too happy to see Nathan. I walked quickly as he held his arms out for me, his gaze had shifted from comforting me to anger towards the two men. He placed his arms around me as I reached him and I rested my head against his shoulder. My heart rate began to decrease rapidly as I felt safe in his hold. 'You okay babe?' He whispered against my ear, I nodded gently against him and he turned his head away towards the two men.

'You leave her alone okay!' He shouted in anger. He lifted his arm from around me whispering 'stay here' as he began to approach the men. I began to panic shouting

'Nathan stop! Please!' But he only waved his hand, motioning for me to stay back. I didn't know what to do as I watched Nathan with unwilling eyes.

'Don't you ever touch her again' Nathan said to the two men as he reached them, however his gaze was locked upon the man who was sat with me on the bench only minutes ago. His voice was steady and filled with anger but I could detect a hint, a tone of his voice that suggested he was scared, if only a little. I couldn't believe what was happening, that he felt the need to do this for me. I tried once again to reason with him.

'Nathan please come back babe' I desperately said but this time he ignored me completely. The man spoke to Nathan getting steadily closer to him.

'And what are you gonna do about it?' The man laughed giving Nathan a little push. He seemed to have sobered up a little in his anger. Nathan didn't answer, far from it, he turned to look at me. The look which he gave was one of only one thing, desperation. I gave him almost the same look back, I had no idea what to do at this point.

'Look at me when I'm talking to you' the man said loudly, Nathan quickly turned around obeying his order. What happened next I, and undoubtedly Nathan had never expected. The second man punched him. Punched Nathan. Square in the face. I gasped out in shock, anger and utter horror as Nathan landed cold and hard on the ground.
