Chapter 11

I stood there terrified, fixed to the spot I was standing in. My eyes had glazed over as I watched Nathan on the floor. I would have cried, in my mind I wanted to cry but the shock of it all had prevented me. Nathan was using his hands to move away from the men, he was squirming a little as he groaned in pain holding his face which was now considerably bloody. I wanted to run over, pull him away from them, grab him and hug him without ever letting go but even I knew that wasn't a good idea. I was desperately trying to think of a way to help Nathan.

'Nathan! Please come over here!' I shouted in panic, no other ideas coming to mind. I was finding any sort of reasoned thought unsurprisingly difficult. The men were standing beside him laughing heartily as he struggled. Nathan rolled over onto his side, our eyes met and as I looked at him there, helpless on the floor. That's when I started, I started to cry, uncontrollably. I didn't want to appear weak at that moment but seeing Nathan's face, the look in his eyes and his completely powerless expression. He frowned at me, 'don't cry babe' he mouthed, coughing a little as he did. A small amount of blood trickled from his mouth, I was shaking violently as the men still stood there, I couldn't bear to look and Nathan any longer so I turned away from him, carefully watching the two men, they were now looking over at me, seeing the complete state I was in.

They said something to each other which I couldn't hear and they both looked over at Nathan at once. He was now sitting up but he hadn't moved from the same spot on the grass. I watched the scene in front of me unable to calm myself, shaking even more now and my heart rate going at a most likely unhealthy rate. I was sweating profusely and I could barely manage to stand up straight. They approached Nathan saying something to him which I couldn't quite make out. One of the men kicked him, causing Nathan to let out a spluttering sound as he grabbed his stomach. They turned away from him, now walking in my direction. I didn't have the power, will or chance to move out of the way, however they didn't touch me on their way out of the park only looked me up and down, laughing with deep, mocking tones. In a second of sense I tried my best to remember their faces so we could report them later but the majority of my thoughts were focused on Nathan and the state he was in.

I kneeled beside him, his eyes were open but they had little life in them. I grabbed his hand, squeezing it tightly. 'You're okay now Nathan' I managed a wry smile and he replied with a very similar one, gripping my hand as tightly as I had. 'Lets get you onto the bench' I said, he seemed okay and his breathing was normal which was a good sign. He nodded as I put his arm around my shoulder momentarily letting go of his hand before holding it again as I sat him on the bench. I turned away from him searching my bag for a tissue which I took out and used to wipe his face of the blood.

'Thank you' he managed to say but rather weakly. I smiled at him again, putting down the tissue and hugging him tight.

'No, thank you' I whispered. I didn't hold onto him for long, aware of his injuries but it was long enough to show that I cared. 'You know you're stupid right' I said, trying to lighten the mood of the situation.

'I know' he muttered, he tried to laugh but he had difficulty so I quickly whispered.

'Shh, stay quiet, you'll feel better' he nodded again making a zipping motion across his lips, smiling a little. I smiled back, this time for real. After a while just sitting there, holding each others hands I decided we better clean Nathan up, check that everything was okay.

'Nathan?' I was leaning my head against his shoulder.

'Mhm' he quietly mumbled, I felt his chest vibrate against me.

'Can we go back to your house? Will anyone be there?' He shook his head but to which question he was replying I wasn't sure. For the first time since he had been punched he spoke a full, fluent sentence, sounding much better than before.

'There won't be anyone home till later so we'll be fine for about an hour' continuing to hold hands we got up. I checked Nathan was okay to walk and he seemed to be fine but I kept my eye on him constantly as we left the park.
