Chapter 9

It was 4:30 in the afternoon, I'd gotten home from school about half an hour earlier and I was sitting watching TV when something occurred to me. I had said I was going to ring Nathan! I took out my phone sitting up on the sofa, I really hoped that my Mum wouldn't get home whilst I was on the phone. I dialled his number carefully, trying to keep my hands steady. It started ringing as I held it up to my ear, for 10 seconds there was no answer...then 20...then 30. It finally went to answer phone and put it down on the side table. I gave Nathan the benefit of the doubt, he was probably not even home from school yet or able to answer the phone. I tried again about an hour later but once again...no answer. Was he only joking earlier? Did he not really mean what he said? Was he just...just playing with me? I dreaded to think about it, although there was no reason for me to trust him having only known him for a matter of days I had a great deal of trust in him already, justified or not.

Just as I was about to get up and get myself something to eat my phone began to ring. Taking a deep breathe I answered it holding it gently against my ear. 'Hello?' He was soft spoken with a hint of embarrassment in his tone of voice and I found it incredibly attractive.

'Hey Nathan' I grinned down the phone nearly forgetting he couldn't see me.

'Hey Sophie, how are you?' There was a sense of awkwardness in the air between us, I didn't count this as a bad thing though as I don't know about Nathan but it made me feel so comfortable that we both acted in the same way. I paused a moment, pondering a reply,

'I'm good thank you, even better talking to you' I giggled quietly trying my best not to be heard, I couldn't help myself.

'Oh really?' His laugh chorused down the earpiece, high pitched and totally contagious, I was in love with it. I giggled again. 'You're cute you know Sophie' he said sweetly, I was a bit taken a back by the compliment.

'Oh thank you' I said quietly. I heard his heavy breathing against the phone when suddenly his end went silent for a moment then,

'Sorry Mum! I'm on the phone!' I heard him shout, though rather muffled as I suspected he was covering his phone with his hand. Suddenly he spoke clearly again. 'Sorry about that!' He apologised,

'It's okay!' I replied happily, I couldn't stop smiling at how cute he sounded.

'Hope you liked my performance yesterday, I didn't know you were going to be there!' He said in a cheerful tone.

'You were honestly amazing! Charlotte invited me I didn't even know what it was for!' I could have said more about his performance but most of which would have been extremely embarrassing to recite to him down the phone.

'Aw thank you babe! Well I'm glad you made it' there it was again. Babe. And the way he said it made it even more endearing to me.

'It's okay I'm glad I did too!' I answered.

'I was thinking that maybe me and you could meet up later tonight?' He asked in a questioning tone and slightly huskily which unsurprisingly I found dreadfully attractive.

'Sounds good' I said, trying to sound a little less happy than I was feeling but I still think my tone came across as rather too excited.

'Okay! So I'll see you at 8 then?' He asked.

'Of course but where?'

'The park by the school?' He questioned hopefully.

'Okay I'll be there' I replied as once again his end went silent momentarily and then I heard,

'Okay calm down! I'll be there in a minute!' As before his voice became clear again as he said 'sorry about her' he laughed, 'what was it you just said?' I hesitated to reply as I'd been so hypnotised by his voice that I'd forgotten my previous statement.

'Oh, I'll see you at 8! That was it!' I cheerily answered.

'How did you forget so quickly?' He laughed as he mocked me, I was almost certain he knew the exact reason.

'Shh' I whispered giggling. Once again he laughed lightly starting to speak,

'I better go! My Mum will not leave me alone, see you in a bit babe' He hung up.

The conversation had undoubtedly been a little awkward but I was certain that as it went on we had settled into each other and before long we were flirting, if only mildly but I didn't care. It felt like an achievement. Going by my phone the time was almost 6, I plugged it in and got up to get changed out of my uniform. I picked out some skinny jeans and a blue jumper which fitted tightly to my skin in the hope that it would keep me warm in the autumn air. I had two hours to get ready, more than enough time to take a bath.

I got out of the bath drying my hair with a towel and changed into my outfit. Letting my hair dry naturally I put on my makeup, not wanting to look like I was trying too hard I kept it minimal with a light pink lipgloss and only a small amount of blusher and mascara. I finished drying off the ends of my hair with the hairdryer checking on the time as I went. I finished getting ready at about half past 7 leaving me plenty of time to get to the park, I wasn't going to risk being late there.

I stepped out into the cold air pulling my leather jacket tighter around me. The wind was gently whistling and there was a light dampness from where it had been raining. I walked briskly, as I was slightly chilly, street lights were already on so I had no trouble in seeing where I was going. It was relatively quiet out apart from the occasional shout or laugh which could be heard rippling through the Friday night dusk. I pulled on the gate of the park and slipped through, pushing it quietly closed behind me. I approached the nearest bench, taking a seat at it, it was cold against my legs as a loud shout suddenly came from somewhere nearby, it startled me as I sat shivering slightly on the bench. I looked around for Nathan just in case he was already here but he was no where to been seen. I waited for around five minutes when suddenly I heard a creak from across the park, I looked over in it's direction quickly but a tree shielded the gate. As a figure appeared in my line of sight I automatically assumed it to be Nathan, I sighed in relief, however, in that moment another figure appeared behind the man. Neither of them were Nathan that was clear and I suddenly felt a strong sensation of unease as they took confident strides in my direction.
