"I swear I am going to murder her!" the door to the blacksmith's bursts open and a very angry red headed princess charges through it, shouting and balling, startling the young blacksmith.
"What did she do now Mer?" he asked slowly.
"She only organised a betrothal for my hand!" She answers in distress. "Without consulting me first! Without asking if I was ok with it! Without even considering that I don't want this!" She slumped herself on a nearby stool.
Soon after, a glass of water was placed on the table in front of her.
"Thanks," she whispers.
"It's what I'm here for," he chuckled nervously before seating himself on the place opposite her.
He watched in awe as she downed the water he'd given her, admiring her beauty so many overlooked. The way her bright curls bounced perfectly around her face; her electric blue eyes shone in even the dimmest of lighting and her hot-headed and fiery personality most feared - he, however, adored it.
"Thanks Hiccup," she murmured gratefully, standing up and readying herself to leave. "You always know how to make me feel better."
"What are friends for?" he asks with a smile.
Merida and Hiccup had been the best of friends since the beginning, much to the surprise of their parents. Merida, the feisty, hot-headed princess, had a natural talent of weaponry use- specifically in archery. Hiccup, however, was another story. He had a feeble and weak figure and struggled even lifting a sword but was skilled at the blacksmith trade and sketching. Two completely different worlds coming together in a bond; a friendship.
But...
For Hiccup, it was more than just a bond. Meant more, felt more, was more. You see, he'd grown attached to the fiery princess. Attached, in the sense, that he'd developed feelings for her. Feelings that soon mutated into a crush. A hopeless crush on his best friend and future ruler of the kingdom. Not a chance! he thought.
That evening, after his shift at the smithery, he headed home plotting a way to avoid his father and hide away in his room. Alone. Unfortunately, he had no such luck. As soon as he creaked the door open the booming voice of his father sounded.
"Son, we need to talk!" he wore a stony glare that tore deep into Hiccup's soul. He gulped.
"Can't this wait? I... er... have work to do. For Gobber." he lied with a nervous smile.
"No." Stoick says sternly.
Hiccup sighs. "Go on then."
"The queen has announced a betrothal of her daughter, the princess of DunBroch. She has chosen the four lords of the kingdom to put their eldest sons forward to compete for her hand in marriage." he pauses and adds. "And knowing how close you two are I thought... you know."
His father's eyes locked on him, not shifting until an answer was given. "I- she- she's just a friend," he stuttered hopelessly, knowing deep down, to him, she was so much more. "ugh! I give up! Yes! I accept!"
"Fantastic!" his father bellows, clapping his hands together. "We gather in the castle at 8 sharp! Be there!"
Hiccup lay in bed that night recalling the discussion he'd shared with his dad only moments before and the complaints Merida had burst into the blacksmith's with of her mum and the arranged marriage. It was certain. He was going to be roasted alive... but he couldn't refuse the obvious opportunity of her possibly becoming his; forever. He'd just have to wait, and see what fate had in mind for him.
