"Merida DunBroch!" Elinor scolded. "You are to do as you are told young lady!" She grabbed the young girl's wrist, dragging her up the steps to 'Elite dance studios'.

"But what if I don't want to dance!" The 5 year old whined.

"Nonsense! I have not raised you to be a stubborn brat, I have raised you to be an obedient young lady!" And with that she pushed her daughter through the doors of the studio.

The doors clicked behind her. She heaved a heavy sigh and walked towards the front desk, standing on her tip-toes to see over.

"What may I do for you Miss?" the woman at the desk asked, her eyes never leaving her computer screen.

"Where's studio J?" Merida asked timidly as she adjusted her bag on her shoulder.

The woman jabbed her finger down the corridor. "Last door on your right."

"Thank you." She trudged through the halls until she reached the last door on the right with a sign above it that read 'Studio J - J troupe'. "This is it." she mumbled irritably to herself.

She creaked the door open to the sound of blaring music and screaming kids. Youngsters played around noisily without a care in the world.

Merida stepped slowly into the studio clinging to the strap of her bag. There was no sign of authority anywhere in the studio; no teacher, no adult, no one older than 9. She sat herself on a nearby bench.

A 6 year old girl with long, blonde, plaited hair came and sat beside her, earning her attention. The girl wore a black leotard, white tights, pink dance shoes and a pink tutu. "My name's Rapunzel!" She greeted enthusiastically, holding out a hand. "Rapunzel Corona."

Merida smiled gratefully at the excitable girl. If it wasn't for her, she was sure to have had the hell of experiences at the studio. "Merida DunBroch." she replied and shook the Rapunzel's hand.

"Not wearing a tutu I see."

Merida looked down at her dance clothes. It consisted of exactly the same items as Rapunzel just minus the pink skirt. "Yeah. I was never one for pink and frilly."

Rapunzel giggled. "I can tell we're going to be best friends!" She exclaimed.

Their discussion was cut short by a voice. "Hey Frizzball!" The two looked up to see a slightly older girl with shoulder-length, plaited hair wearing a black leotard advancing towards them, two other girls following behind them.

"That's Astrid Hofferson," Rapunzel whispered. "She's the J-troupe captain and the best dancer in the studio. What she says goes. As you can see she doesn't like newbies."

"Really?" Merida replied sarcastically "I'd never had guessed."

"Listen to me bed-head." Astrid snapped. "You'd better prove your worth sooner or later, or you're going to have her to explain to." She pointed her perfectly-painted nails to the door where a tall woman with black hair and a dark expression stood. Behind her, two young boys stood; one with shaggy, brown hair wearing a white t-shirt, black shorts and black dance shoes, the other with messy, white hair wearing a black t-shirt, white shorts and black dance shoes.

The woman strode into the room and spoke in monotone as she read from a clipboard. "Welcome the new dancers Hiccup, Jack and Merida." A small round of claps sounded. "My name is Ms Rifka and I am your dance instructor for this year."

The two boys walked awkwardly behind her as she entered the studio.

Merida stared intently at the boy with the brown hair, examining his bright, green eyes and unusual freckles. It was certain this kid was different from the others, she just couldn't put her finger on it.

"1,2,3,4..." Miss Rifka had thrown the kids in the deep end. She had them spinning themselves stupid and pliéing into next week.

Merida's feet ached with the constant movement and tricky moves.

"Break!" Miss Rifka announced, striding into the studio office.

The whole of J troupe heaved heavy sighs of relief for the minutes of rest they'd been blessed with. But Merida wasn't thinking of her aching feet. No. Her mind was set on finding out exactly what was different about that boy.

"Hey, Hiccup right?" she greeted warmly.

"Y-yeah" he replied nervously. "And you are?"

"Merida. Merida DunBroch." she held out her hand like Rapunzel had done for her an hour before. He took it gladly and slowly shook it.

"Hiccup Haddock," he grinned.

Rapunzel approached them followed by the other new kid, Jack. "Hey Mer! This is Jack!" she introduced. "I see you've made a friend."

"Yeah this is Hiccup," Merida replied. "Hiccup, Rapunzel. Rapunzel, Hiccup."

She took a glance at the boy behind Rapunzel. He had an icy glare on his face with a mischievous smirk playing on his lips; she looked back at him with a harder glare.

Their glare-fest was interrupted by Miss Rifka's voice announcing another rehearsal.

"See you after rehearsal?" Hiccup asked cheerily.

"See you after rehearsal Hic," she smiled and took her place on the dance floor.

"Jack!" Merida screamed in annoyance at the boy behind her as they stretched on the barre. Her foot extended quickly hitting him square in the stomach.

"Hey!" he shouted in response.

The timid Hiccup stood beside them with a worried expression on his face as the two fought.

Rapunzel was all too focused on perfecting a dance move to notice the commotion the other two were causing.

Little did they all know that they would all be spending a large amount of time in the others' company.

10 years later

"Merida! Rapunzel! Come into my office." Miss Hallows, the A troupe coach, requested. The two followed her obediently. "We have thought long and hard about this and we have come to a decision. Merida, will be given the position of A troupe dance captain and Rapunzel, you will be her deputy."

The girls' faces lit up. "Thank you Miss!" try said in unison as they went to leave. Miss Hallows followed them to announce the news to the rest of the troupe. Let's just say a particular dancer didn't take it lightly.

"Astrid I have made my decision and that is final!" Miss Hallows explained as Astrid stormed out of the studio. "Merida will also be dancing a duet with Hiccup for nationals." she added.

Merida's eyes divert nervously towards Hiccup's. He looked up at her and smiled broadly, a smile she returned gladly.

Rapunzel nudged her in the ribs. "Looks like you get your moment in the spotlight with your man." she joked.

"Shut up." Merida blushes scuffing her shoes on the floor.

"It's true he totally likes you!"

Merida looked back up at Hiccup who was discussing something with Jack, his face flushed a deep shade of red as he glanced back at her with a soft smile; a smile she gladly returned.
