I got dressed in my blue jeans, pink blouse and flat black shoes. I pinned my thick curly hair up in a bun and decided to wear my glasses for a change. I have to wear them for reading but I suppose it just looks good with what I'm wearing. I never used to wear my glasses often. I didn't need to read at the orphanage, even during classes, and I felt like I looked weird in them.
I sat in my room for a bit before I went down. I looked at myself in the mirror for a while, debating whether or not my hair should be up or down. It felt like I looked weird. Then I realised, I'm missing an earring. I have 4 piercings, both in my ears. My normal ear piercings and second lobe piercings. The second lobe piercing on my right ear was gone. "Dammit," I said smacking the table. I rubbed where the missing earring was, "my favourite pair, man..."
I wondered if there was a way to magic up my earring. Suppose I'll ask Hermione.
I approached the door, ready to go downstairs and face the awkwardness with my brother and have the whole nosey Gryffindor lot listening in. I was dreading it.
I opened the door and walked down the stone staircase. I saw from the open balcony bit, Harry, Hermione and Ron sitting by the fire waiting for me. I saw from the corner of my eye Hermione spot me coming down and Harry turning to look. I finally made it down and suddenly a person jump-hugged me like a hug-ninja-thing. It was Harry, of course. "You look beautiful, Maria," he said and he kissed me on the cheek.
He took me by surprise so of course my response was a rather unnecessarily cheerful, "welp. Wasn't expecting that". He laughed. The smile on his face was emotional. It seemed like he'd just had a long talk with Hermione and had a lot on his mind anyways.
I could feel everyone eyes in the common room on us. "So, dinner!" I said loudly. Then everyone seemed to start to scatter. Harry laughed and I could see Ron looking down with his hands in his pocket. He was awkwardly smiling but he didn't seem happy about something. Hermione stood next to him with her hands crossed. I looked at her and she smiled, but she seemed uneasy.
As we were walking down I asked Hermione if there was a spell to help find lost things. She thought for a moment and said she didn't know, but she'd look into it. "Wow! Hermione actually doesn't know something!" Said Ron teasing, "how does it feel to be one of us?"
"Us?" Repeated Hermione, "who's us? Harry is relatively knowledgable, you on the other hand..." She grimaced and rolled her eyes. Harry and I laughed at their tiff.
We made it to the great hall where dinner was served. I sat next to Hermione who sat beside Ginny, and opposite us was Harry and Ron. Tonight seemed to be an ocean of seafood! (Ha. See what I did there?)
There was lobster, crab, cod, clams, mussels and oysters. Scallops, shrimps and sardines! There were king prawns and baby prawns. There were 8 different types of salmon and a giant squid in the middle of everyone's part of their table. Not to mention the giant sword fish that went straight across each part of the table, all facing the same way and surrounded by caviar.
Too bad seafood makes me ill.
We sat down and everyone dug in and filled their plates, picking off large chunks of the sword fish and pulling off pieces of the giant squid tentacles. "Why aren't you eating?" Asked Harry
"Fish makes me sick, like really sick. As in I will throw up, and have a stomach ache for days," I replied laughing
Everyone in our group made "ooh!" and "ahh" sounds while they also laughed. They weren't fascinated ooh's and ahh's, they were more like sympathetic but apathetic you-don't-know-what-you're-missing ooh's and ahh's. I didn't see the big deal in seafood, though.
Suddenly, chicken, salad, bread and olives appeared on my plate. As in it looked like this gold plate gave birth to food! I starred at my plate in shock and looked up at everyone who was looking at my plate. "No way!" I shouted, "please tell me I have another power to summon food!" Everyone laughed.
"No!" Laughed Hermione, "the plates are enchanted to know when you literally cannot eat anything from the table. So clearly you won't touch any of it,"
"Nope," I agreed, "not a single bit!" I said as I dug in to the chicken.
We laughed and spoke for hours. They told me about all of their old times in Hogwarts. I was fascinated by the stories the same way I was fascinated by the Peter Pan and Sherlock Holmes stories when I was ten. Harry came face to face with the man who killed our parents trying to keep the philosophers stone from him. Well, face to spirit and the back of a bald guys head. The cool part, though, was that the stone would only be revealed to someone who wanted to retrieve the stone, but not use it. He told me about the mirror of Erised and how he saw our parents, something which I haven't seen before in my life. "I can't believe I haven't shown you yet!" Said Harry, "as soon as we go upstairs I'll show you the picture I have". Well that would've been a good thing to show me from the first day! In their second year, Harry came face to face with the man again! This time as his younger self. He took Harry into his diary and made him believe Hagrid had set lose a murderous monster on every half blood in the school! Obviously, it was him. At this point Harry realised who he was and it turns out 'I am Lord Voldermort' is an anagram for Tom Marvolo Riddle; his real name. It was actually him who'd let lose a snake called a basilisk from the chamber of secrets which is located in the girls bathroom. He'd bewitched Ginny to write messages and leave clues. Harry defeated the basilisk with the sword of Gryffidor, stabbed the diary with a basilisk fang which destroyed Tom Riddle. Then Dumbledores Phoenix bird healed Harry's arm with it's tear. Apparently, Phoenix tears have healing powers. Cool!
"And now this year, it's you and Sirius Black!" Said Ron
"What does Sirius Black have to do with any of it?" I asked confused
"Apparently he's out to get Harry," Ron replied
"Out to get him? As in what?"
"To kill him," he replied
"Ron!" Elbowed Hermione while Harry gave an angry look at him.
"Ow!" Ron yelped, "it's true!"
"What is he talking about?" I panicked
"Don't worry about it," said Harry as he took my hand, "it will be fine,"
"But why does he want to kill you?"
"He helped kill our parents, I suppose when we didn't die- or I didn't die- he wants to come back and finish the job," he replied eerily.
I starred at him in shock. "You all seem awfully comfortable with this! Am I missing something?"
"No..." Sighed Hermione, "we always get into this sort of trouble... Just wait, you'll see".
"Anywho..." I said moving away from that conversation, "what's happening? What's new?"
"Oh! We're all going Hogsmeade tomorrow!" Squealed Hermione, "all the book shops I'll go to! And the shrieking shack!"
"The sweet shop!" Said Ron with eyes glistening.
"The shrieking shack is loads better than the sweet shop!" Debated Hermione
"Do we have to go?" Ron groaned "can't you go with Lavender or Pavarti?"
"No! They don't care about things like the shrieking shack!"
"Nor do I!" Ron argued, meanwhile, Harry was looking pretty dull.
"What's wrong, Harry?" I asked, "aren't you excited?"
"No. Because we're not going," He said glumly
"What do you mean? Why not?" I argued thinking he was restricting us from going, "is it because of Sirius Black?"
"No. I want to go. We need a parents or carer's signature,"
"Well, what if we get Professor McGonagal to sign it? I mean, she is head of Gryffindor house. She's technically our carer,"
"Yeah, we could try before they leave," he said looking down at his plate.
Ron and Hermione felt bad, after that Hermione whispered to Ron "you know it's meant to be the most haunted building in Britain!", then they didn't speak of Hogsmeade again.
I looked up to speak to Harry again but instead, I caught Draco's glance. He'd finished his food and his arms were crossed, his body rested on them on the table so he was able to lean over and talk to his friends who sat further down. He smiled at me so I smiled back. Harry turned and saw him smiling at me. He turned back looking nauseous. Ron did the same. Hermione looked at me from the side, smiled, then looked back at her food.
Today was a good day.
