The next day came and I didn't get much sleep. Not only was I having aggressive dreams about Sirius fucking Black, but I was also nervous about showing Snape my bending.
I don't know why I haven't been practicing.
Water seems to be the easiest one but- so is fire - in some ways. I guess.
I woke up and decided to wake up Hermione, too. I needed her advice.
"Just concentrate,"
"Don't forget to breathe,"
"Have you tried meditating? It's not just muggle practice, you know?"
"Use your hands more,"
"Clear your mind,"Which was just as unhelpful as:
"Where's your practice,"
"I think your too scared to,"
"Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing- concentrate!"After that, I made my way down to the Great Hall and only ate one slice of toast. I was one of the first people there.
There were tea cups and bowls with leaves and colourful flowers which had cute little worms on them - which smelled like fresh air - for the 'early birds'.
I played with a worm.
Called it "Jeff". Had a good chat.
I made my way to Snape's office. In all fairness, I didn't care whether or not this went south. I just want to watch the Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw match. Apparently, Harry has the eye for the pretty seeker, Cho.
She's the only girl on the team! That's something to be proud of, I guess.
I stopped outside his door and just as I was about to knock on the door, it swung open. There stood the tall and gloomy professor Snape, scowling at me. He grimaced and checked his pocket watch.
"You're late," he stated.
"Only by, like, a minute," I stretched and yawned.
He stuck the watch in my face, "two," he corrected me.
I waved it out of my face and apologised.
The courtyard was freezing. I looked up in the sky and around the grounds and spotted a few dementors starring at the castle. As my eyes fell lower, I spotted Draco sitting on the window of the corroded, moss-filled arches. He sat with arms crossed, leaning against one of the pillars. He quickly raised his eyebrows 'hello' at me. A spiteful greeting from an equally spiteful boy.
I knew he was here to watch me mess up.
"I'm waiting," said Snape, standing straight, nose up and looking down at me.
So, I stood in stance, breathed, and raised my arms to bend the water from in the fountain. I managed to make a ripple in the stream but that was it.
"How very disappointing... I had some hope that you would've improved a lot more than that," Snape said dead toned.
I looked over my shoulder to look at Draco. The corner of his mouth twitched up into a smirk and he clapped sarcastically.
Snape loudly cleared his throat. So I turned crossly and faced him.
"Again," he instructed.
I stood in stance, feet wide apart. I breathed in through my nose, and out through my mouth with my eyes closed.
"Feel the energy from the water, and use it, like an extension of yourself,"
I did. I felt the energy run through my blood, like a muscle. I raised my arms, pushed out and then pulled the water towards me.
I did it! I bended the water.
The really confusing part was, what do I do with it?
"Carry it! Stop trying to control it. Create a connection, a bond,"
I walked around with it and swooshed it back and forth between my hands. I suppose I began dancing with it in a way, or more like fighting something that wasn't there. The water went over my head and around my body.
I got bored and decided to start shooting it, creating fists and flat palms. Experimenting with the difference in intensity.
"It's not about strength, Potter. Water is calm and controlled. Imagine the push and pull of tides in the ocean. The idea is to feel, make a connection with the water, it is yours, and you are it,"
I cast the water around making loops and creating snake-like motions until the water got too heavy, my arms started to ache and I couldn't hold it up anymore. So I let go and let it splash to the ground, spraying Professor Snape.
He stood with his eyes shut, squinting at the ice cold droplets on his face, and then opened them again.
"Good work, Potter"
I smiled and turned to face Draco smugly.
Snape turned to him and said "sorry, Mr Malfoy. Mrs Potter is not your ghost,"
I smiled devilishly at Malfoy and turned around to find Harry, Ron and Hermione watching in pride and awe. Harry and Hermione began cheering and jumping in the air as if I'd just won the house cup. Ron smiled and clapped.
Snape's lips curved, "don't forget to clear this up," he said motioning to the huge puddle on the floor and the half empty water fountain.
"Sure," i replied.
He left through the archways and my brother and friend ran towards me, rewarding me with pats on the back and hugs.
"Well done, Maria! I'm so proud!" Hermione clapped.
"That was brilliant!" Exasperated Harry.
They both looked at Ron waiting for a congratulatory comment. I just looked down knowing that I wouldn't get one.
He watched his feet with his hands in the pockets of his cloak. Then corners of his mouth twitched up and he said "yeah, it was pretty cool,"
We all laughed together and admired the mess i'd made.
"Right," I began, "you guys go, i'll meet you in a bit. I've still got to clear this up,"
"Just do it now and come," said Harry.
"I can't," i laughed, "i need to take a break for a minute. Im aching all over"
"Ok, we'll see you at the match," smiled Hermione.
She put her arms over the boys shoulders and left.
I sat on the side of the water fountain and caught my breath. A pair of perfect, black, shiny shoes came in to vision and my heart sank because I knew who this was and did not want to speak to him. Then I heard his dreaded voice which was like gold to me, "good job".
I looked up, "thanks..."
"So, I guess you could throw snowballs at quite a distance then," he mischievously grinned.
I sighed and sat up straight, "nah, sorry, Draco. Not that advanced yet,"
"But you could do it?" He pressed.
"I guess,"
"Is that a confession?"
"Are you accusing me of something?"
"Are you guilty?" He smartly replied.
I laughed through my nose and looked him in the eyes.
"Whatever you think I did, Draco. I didn't. But I heard about what happened down at Hogsmeade. How you and your mongrels tried to attack Ron. Then you fell on your arse and ran away in tears," I stood, "what happened? And what's your problem with Ron?"
Draco watched me in silence, and without an answer, he turned away and made his way to The Quidditch field.
The courtyard then grew empty, with just me in it. I enjoyed the peaceful sound of the wind blowing through the stone archways, the sound of birds and water trickling in the fountain. As much as i enjoyed the serenity, I didn't want to miss my brothers match so I returned to my feet, stood in a wide stance, and cast the water from the cold ground back into the fountain, allowing it to return to it's full, sparkling, gushes of fresh, flourished spring.
