Chapter 4

Demi's P.O.V (The Next Day)

"Good Morning. I assume that you are Mackenzie and Sophie's parents." Me and Alex nodded our heads as we stood up. The teacher smiled at us as she held out her hand. "I'm their class teacher Miss Hills. It's nice to finally meet you." Miss Hills said

We followed her into a room. "Please take a seat. Would you like something to drink?" Miss Hill asked us. "We're going to be here for a while." Me and Alex shook her heads a few seconds later.

Another teacher came into the room. "Hi I'm Miss Robinson and I'm the special needs co coordinator." She smiled at us. I was a little confused as to why she was here but I still shook her hand and introduced myself. She sat down beside Miss Hill and straightened out some of her papers before she started talking

"So I know it's probably a shock and you are probably wondering why I'm here but we were hoping to discuss with you some concerns we have." Miss Robinson explained to me. My heart started thudding against my chest as soon as she said that. What was going on with my girls?

"What's going on?" I asked them slightly confused and worried

"We've noticed some strange behaviour with Mackenzie." Miss Hill started.

"What kind of strange behaviour? She's always been good in class." Alex told Miss Hill.

"She's not in trouble. Mackenzie's an angel in class. She's quiet and she does her work. She's a good student." Miss Hill told us

"Then what's the problem?" Alex asked. Miss Hill hesitated for a second.

"Does Dyslexia run in your family?" Miss Hill asked me and Alex

"It runs in Mackenzie's biological mother's family. Yes." Alex answered.

"We're seeing a lot of signs of Dyslexia in Mackenzie. She writes her letters the wrong way. She finds it hard to understand what she's been reading. Her writing is really bad and she finds spelling really difficult. She's intelligent and very capable of succeeding. There just seems to be something or something's that are stopping her from achieving her potential in her school work." Miss Robinson started explaining to us. I glanced at Alex

"She doesn't seem to struggle at home." Alex answered. He looked a little confused.

"Girls with Dyslexia are a lot different from boys with Dyslexia in many different ways. Girl's will normally hide the fact that they are struggling with their school work. They will try and keep it to themselves and they'll find different ways to hide it from everyone. Dyslexia can be very embarrassing for children and many kids try to hide it from people around them, including their parents." Miss Robinson said to us.

Mackenzie's P.O.V

I kept my head down and looked at my school work. Jessica nudged me. I looked up at her as she looked at my school work

"That's not how you spell that word. Are you special ed or something?" She asked me. Jessica was Sophie's best friend but she was one of the main people who bullied me. I shook my head.

"That would explain why she's such a freak." Gavin sniggered at me.

"I-I'm n-not a freak." I stuttered. Everyone on my table started laughing and me. I tried to hold back the tears that were forming in my eyes.

Then a chant started to form on my table. Everyone started to chant the word 'special ed.' Soon enough the whole class was chanting it apart from Sophie who was looking at me from her desk.

"Look at her work! My four-year-old sister could spell better than her!" Jessica sniggered as she snatched my book from the table.

"Dumb."

"Stupid."

"Thick."

"Special Ed."

The words echoed in my head until I couldn't take it anymore and I got up before I ran out of the room. Tears started to fall as I ran out of the classroom. Everyone started to laugh at me as I reached the door.

"Mackenzie. Come back here. You can't just walk out of class." The teacher told me. I ignored them and went out before I slammed the door behind me.

I fell onto the floor a second later before I brought my knees to my chest and placed my head in my hands as I cried my eyes out. I heard someone coming out of the classroom. I looked up as I wiped my tears away from my eyes. Sophie knelt down in front of me. She pulled me into a hug a second later. I cried into her shirt.

"I'm so sorry." She whispered. "I didn't realise they were being so mean to you."

I pulled away from her. "Can't you try a little harder?" Sophie asked. "It's not that hard."

I looked at her for a moment. "That's easy for you to say. You are good at this kind of stuff. You're good at maths and English and science. You know how to spell easy words and you can even spell some really difficult ones. I can't. I'm already trying my hardest. Maybe I'm just stupid." I looked down at the floor

"Well why can't you remember how to spell things. We're told how to spell them." Sophie replied to me. "Maybe if you tried harder to spell you wouldn't be picked on by the whole class. I don't understand why you can't just learn like everyone else in the class. Do you like acting like you're stupid or something?" I looked at her confused as tears started to fall down my cheeks

"Maybe you just like the attention. Stop being so lazy Mackenzie and get on with it like we all have to." Sophie yelled at me. She stood up before she went back into the classroom leaving me on my own.
