Chapter 9

Mackenzie's P.O.V

"This is our little secret okay?" He told me as he finished. I nodded my head, not trusting my voice. My whole body ached and I just wanted everything to stop. He grinned at me as he started fading into the darkness. "Good girl." He said before he finally faded away and I heard Sophie's voice.

"Mackenzie, wake up!" Sophie yelled as she hit me with a pillow. I opened my eyes a second later before I turned around and looked at her

"Ow. That hurt Sophie." I complained as I took the pillow off of her and hit her with it, twice as hard. Sophie glared at me before she snatched it off me and placed it back on her bed.

"Well what am I supposed to do if you're screaming in your sleep and you won't wake up?" She asked me as she folded her arms across her chest.

"I don't know...but you don't have to hit me with a pillow." I replied to her.

"Well it worked." She muttered.

"So does pouring freezing cold water on someone but that doesn't mean you should do it." I argued.

"Stop being such a drama queen Mac. You were keeping me awake, like you have been for the last three weeks. How am I meant to get enough sleep when you're being too noisy?" Sophie asked me as I heard footsteps running towards our door for the first time. The door opened a minute later.

"Is everything okay? We heard screaming." Dad asked as he came into the room.

"Mackenzie had another nightmare." Sophie said as she rolled her eyes

Mum looked at dad. "Have you been watching horror movies with her again?" He asked.

"That was one time Demi." Dad reminded her. Mum raised her eyebrows

"Okay maybe three...but that's not the point. The point is, I banned her from watching them with me because of the night terrors she had." Dad told her.

"It took you three movies to make you realise you shouldn't be watching horror movies with an eight-year-old?" Demi asked him one second later

"Yes but that's not the point. The point is Mackenzie had a nightmare."

"Yes and I'm trying to figure out why." Demi argued back. She turned towards me.

"Mackenzie have you been watching horror movies again?" Demi asked me.

"No. I just had a nightmare." I replied to her.

"Mackenzie you've been waking up screaming in the night for the last few weeks." Mum reminded me.

I looked away from her unsure what to tell her. "We've been talking about monsters and stuff in school recently because it was Halloween and some of the kids took it too far." I lied to her.

Sophie had some how managed to fall asleep in the middle of everything so she wasn't able to tell mum and dad that I was lying. Mum sighed before she sat down beside me. "Monsters aren't real Mac." Mum reminded me.

"I know. It just got really scary that's all." I told her before I laid down and pulled the covers over me. Mum and dad kissed me good night before they went back out of the room. I wondered if mum and dad actually believed me. I wasn't very good at lying to people and they usually knew when I was lying.

I tried to push my thoughts aside as I closed my eyes and prepared myself for another nightmare about him.

The Next Morning

Sophie jumped on top of me as I opened my eyes. "Soph. Get off me." I told her a second later. "Before I push you off." I added. Sophie rolled off of me a minute later.

"Come on Mac. It's time to get up for school." Sophie told me as she went towards her closet. I swear Sophie was way too happy in the morning. My body filled with fear as I remembered that I would have to see him again.

"Tell mum and dad I'm not feeling well." I replied to Sophie as I rolled over and closed my eyes again.

"You mean tell mum and dad you want to bunk of school." Sophie corrected me.

I ignored her and tried to go back to sleep but the door opened a minute later.

"Dad Mackenzie wants to bunk of school." Sophie told him straight away

I mentally cursed at Sophie before my dad said anything. "Mac you are not bunking off school. Now get up before I make you." Dad threatened

"But Daddy..." I trailed off before I gave him the puppy eyes. Dad raised his eyebrows at me.

"Mac I'm serious. Get up." He told me.

"But I'm too tired to get up." I moaned as I closed my eyes again. There was silence as my dad went towards my bed. A second later he started to tickle me. I thrashed around as I burst into fits of laughter. A few minutes later my dad picked me up and carried me out of mine and Sophie's room.

I glared at him before I crossed my arms. "I hate you right now." I told him before I stomped downstairs for breakfast and tried to prepare myself for another day at the hell hole everyone else calls school. My dad simply laughed as he followed me downstairs and into the kitchen where mum was sorting out breakfast.

"You love me really Mac." Dad said to me as we both sat down at the table.

I ignored him as mum placed a bowl of cereal in front of me. I ate in silence as I dreaded another day of school and another day of seeing him
