Chapter 17

Sophie's P.O.V

"Sophie. Get down here right now." Mum called up the stairs. I sighed before I placed my pencil down and went downstairs a minute later.

"Would you care to explain to me why Mackenzie has just run away?" Mum asked me as she placed her hands on her hips.

"Because I told her that you were pregnant." I mumbled

"Sophie we were going to tell you guys once we know that the risk of me having another miscarriage has gone down. Do you know how much danger you've put your sister under?" Mum asked me.

"Mackenzie can look after herself mum. She's eight years old." I reminded mum

"Whether she can look after herself or not isn't the point because guess who escaped from prison last week?" I looked down at the ground a second later

"Shouldn't we be looking for her?" I asked a second later.

"Your dad has gone to look for her, we're meant to stay here just in case she comes back."

"Okay..." I trailed off.

"You should really think before you say something to Mackenzie, Sophie. We could have explained it to her in a way where she didn't blow up at us and wasn't in the same streets that her mother's trying to look for her." Mum finished

A key slid in the lock. My mum and I ran towards the door hopefully but it was just dad. He came in soaking wet. "I'm going to get Mac's coat. It's pouring it down out there." He said as he went towards the cupboard and grabbed Mackenzie's coat.

"Can I come with you dad?" I asked him. My dad looked at me for a moment before he nodded his head.

"Get your shoes and coat on then Sophie." Dad said to me.

I ran to put my shoes and coat on while mum and dad spoke to each other. I over heard some of what they said but I shook it off as I managed to put my shoes on and grabbed my coat. I went back over to mum and dad a minute later.

"I'm ready." I told them as I put my coat on. Dad turned around and followed me out of the door. We got into the car before dad pulled out of the drive way.

"She's going to be okay dad." I tried to tell him. He just turned to look at me for a second before he turned his attention back to the road.

"I don't know Sophie. You did something very stupid today." He replied to me a second later.

"I know..." I trailed off as I looked out of the window a second later.

"But do you Sophie? Do you know how much danger Mac is in right now?" He asked me.

"I know that her mum is out of prison. Mum told me." I said.

"But she isn't the only one looking for Mackenzie. Her mother's whole family are looking for her and they're not very nice people Soph."

"Sophie, Mackenzie isn't like most girls her age. She doesn't have the same sense of danger that you have. She's very impulsive and goodness knows what's going to happen." My dad lectured me.

"That's not my fault. That's Mackenzie's." I replied to dad.

"No, no it isn't Soph. Mac has ADHD. Otherwise known as Attention, Deficit, Hyperactivity Disorder. Her brain works different from yours. Her brain is unable to sense danger like you or I can. She could literally be in a strangers car right now and never come back to us Soph." Dad explained to me

I looked at him. "Is that why she get's so hyper?" I asked

Dad nodded his head. "That is why we have been going to the specialist clinic so much with Mac. There's talk about putting her on some form of medication to help her control her ADHD better."

"I'm sorry dad. I never meant to put Mackenzie in danger." I replied to him as tears pricked in my eyes a second later.

"It's okay Soph. Just be more careful next time and be supportive. Mac needs to know that she has a sister on her side no matter what. It can be daunting and embarrassing having this disorder. She needs to know you still love her and support her." Dad continued.

"Is there anything I can do to help her?" I asked my dad

"Be there for her. Talk to her about it and ask her how to help her. Explain it to your friends when they come over. Sophie, Mac is still Mac. She's still the Mac that stayed by your side when you were in hospital and refused to leave. She's still the Mac that sat beside you and hugged you every time you had a nightmare and she's still the Mac that helped you get through the abuse and all the memories of the abuse. She's still Mac and she's still your best friend." Dad reminded me a second later.

"Thanks dad." I replied. He smiled at me.

"No problem and remember hugs and I love you's go a long way." I nodded my head

"I'm going to be the best big sister that I can be." I told him.

"That's my Sophie." Dad smiled even more.

Mackenzie's P.O.V

I shivered as I wrapped my arms around my chest. It was freezing cold and apart

of me wanted to go back home to Mum, dad and Sophie. I'm sure they had a reason to keep it from me. I shouldn't have blown up like that. Mum and dad were probably losing their minds with worry. I was about to turn around and go back when someone grabbed me from behind a second later.

Authors Note:

So Alex explained ADHD a bit more to Sophie and I would just like to say something. Sometimes it can be really hard to understand why someone is struggling when you don't know what's going on in their head. So when Sophie accused Mackenzie of being lazy or acting stupid for attention she was just frustrated because she wanted to help but she didn't know how to. Also if you guys have any questions on ADHD or Dyslexia don't be scared to ask them. I have both (as well as many other things.) so I'll try my hardest to answer them as soon as I can. Also am I explaining everything well in this story? Is there something you want to be explained more? Because I do try but I don't know if I explain everything in a way that everyone can understand.

So as Mackenzie would say I'll see you pineapple sharks when I next update. -Kerri
