Russell sat down at the table, eyeing the home cooked meal I had prepared for just the two of us. He had been on the road for the past nine days, now that he was finally home, it was the least I could do. Along with the small news I had prepared to deliver. He sat down cautiously, looking at the fried chicken, collard greens, Macaroni, cornbread and ribs on his plate.

"You cooked a meal for a small army," He commented, picking up his fork and shoveling some macaroni into his mouth. He moaned and shook his head, "This is a hell of a lot better of eating McDonald Big Macs every night on the road." I nodded with a smile and took a small bite of my chicken. He watched me as he continued to eat his meal.

"What?" I asked him, "Do you not like it?"

"No, it's my favorite, you know I love soul food," He said, wiping his mouth with a napkin. "But... What are you buttering me up for?"

"Nothing," I said, shaking my head, "I just thought you probably had some shitty food while on the road and you needed something nice, fresh... greasy. Your favorite!"

"Don't lie to me, Mo," Damn, he knew me so well. How could he tell I was lying? I set my fork down on my plate and took a deep breath.

"Fine," I told him, "I'm ready to move back to LA."

"You've only been here for four months!" He shouted back, taking a spoonful of collard greens into his mouth. "There is no way in hell you have worked enough to pay off your parents."

"I have enough money, so I am ready to leave," I told him, calmly. I knew he was going to ask me how I got this money. I didn't know how he was going to take this news, but I was prepared to inform him.

"You've been stripping on the low?" He asked, raising his eyebrows. I shook my head. "How the hell did you get the money to move back out there? There is no possible way. Unless you... have been selling drugs or being a prostitute—"

"Don't worry about how I get dirty trying to get this money from," I laughed. He looked mad. "If you were to actually take me seriously the other night you would know my mother got her hands a little dirty and I caught her ass red handed. Let's just say... it ended in my favor. She gave me a very, very generous gift of twenty five million dinero."

Russell stared at me blankly. He set his fork down and interlaced his hands, resting his elbows on the table and setting his chin in between them. He sucked his teeth and shook his head, taking a deep breath. "So... So you just blackmailed your mother?"

I nodded, pretty damn proud of myself. "She killed someone. Did she really think nobody would ever find out?"

"She didn't kill her, Monica, you are in shock and jumping to conclusions," He warned me. "Stop, just stop. You're not going back to LA. You don't have that money. Stop, okay?" I pulled my phone from my pocket and played the voice memo of my mother and I from the previous night. If Russell didn't believe me, this would be sure to sell him. He listened intently to our conversation in the phone.

After the few minutes had passed and the memo was over, he was staring at me blankly. "Now do you believe me?" I asked him. "I told you... I'm damn good." He continued to stare and me blankly. He opened his mouth to say something, but nothing came.

"Monica, that isn't right. You have to call the police... You can't... You can't just blackmail someone like that, she killed someone,"  He said, shaking his head in disbelief. He was at a loss of words. I knew how shocking it must have been. To think someone who you thought was so sweet and so normal, could do something so cruel such as that. It was actually horrifying. However, I didn't let it get to me. My mother had always been a horrible person and nobody had ever believed me. Now, I had proof. This changed everything. "You have to call the police," He repeated.
