"So who's that guy that was in your office earlier? He was so cute," Desiree smirked and poured herself a cup of apple juice. Monica rolled her eyes and shook her head. Living with her sister made her realize exactly why she was the first one in the family to move away. It was hell. She gave her hell.
"He's a friends of Sean's," Monica snapped, irritably. Why did she always want to test her? Couldn't she get a love life of her own instead of coming into Monica's? "We were just discussing business." Desiree must have sensed the irritability thick in her voice.
"Well, if he doesn't have a female in his life make sure to pass him my way," She smirked and giggled into her cup. Jesus Christ.
"Maybe I will," Monica smiled, "You need someone in your life."
She rolled her eyes and slammed her cup down on the counter. "What the hell is up your ass all the time?"
"Hmm," Monica rubbed her chin for dramatic effect. "Maybe because I got taken away from my home, the place I love, the person I love, for no fucking reason. Forced to do something I never wanted to do in the first place and I'm back with the people I wanted to get away from. And I'm a grown ass woman. That's what's up my ass." Desiree looked taken aback but Monica didn't care. Maybe the sooner she made them realize she really didn't want to be here, the sooner she could get out of this hellhole, and more importantly away from Russell and the bad choices he made her do. She shook her head and rubbed her temples.
"It's whatever, you know, Monica," Desiree shrugged and put her cup in the sink. "Maybe you'll get used to living here."
"No, I really won't, this fucking sucks," Monica snapped fast.
"Monica, at least you have a friend here," Desiree tried to put her attitude aside but after Monica's stabbing statement, it wasn't that easy. "Because normally, people in this city, wouldn't be friends with people like you." Monica didn't care what Desiree had to say or how she attempted to hurt her feelings.
"Good," Monica stood up and shook her head. "I wouldn't want to be friends with anyone in this fucked up town anyways." With that, Monica didn't want to hear anymore of what Desiree had to say. She was done. Monica made her way into her room, where the events of just the other night with Russell played in her mind. She groaned and locked the door, deciding to call Sean. She walked out onto the balcony of her room that overlooked the pool, hot tub and the green backyard. I hated it. In LA, there was never any green grass. Monica hated green grass.
"Glad you finally decided to call," Sean muttered into the phone. He did not sound amused. Monica had been completely avoiding his calls, texts, FaceTime calls, everything. "You're having so much fun in Oklahoma you completely forgot about your loving boyfriend?" Monica signed, running her hands over her face.
"I'm so sorry, Sean," Monica said, shaking her head. "Actually the opposite. This town is so shitty and everyday my days get even shittier. I really need to vent."
"Why should I listen to your venting?" Sean's voice was full of venom. "That's just how it's gonna work? When I need you, when I want to talk, you can't, but when you need me or someone to vent to I automatically have to be here?"
There was a pang in Monica's chest. Maybe she should've just called one of her friends. "Sean, can we not do this? I just got into an argument with my stupid little sister and I... I don't want to do this, okay?" Sean sighed on the other side of the phone.
"You're right, baby, I'm sorry, I'm just on edge with the new album coming out and all," Monica's heart warmed. She was glad to have one person on her side. "But I have to come out to Oklahoma City soon. To see you, but I have to see a basketball game and maybe get court side seats. Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant are supposed to be beast this season." The mention of Russell's name out of Sean's mouth made her breathing intensify. "Do you wanna go see a game?"
"Um... Babe, why don't we go do something else? Basketball is so overrated," My cheeks were heating up to a hundred degrees. If Sean and Russell met... I couldn't even think about that without wanting to vomit.
"Babe, I know you don't like basketball, but I've been waiting to see Oklahoma. Besides, when I met Russell a couple months ago, he said he could get me court side. He's a real nice dude, you should meet him." I was flaming at this point. If Sean saw me in person, he would for sure know what was up.
"I heard he's kind of cocky and ignorant around town," I clarified, running my hands through my hair. Why was this happening to me?
Sean laughed on the other end. "But I mean, babe, he has something to be cocky about. So do I. So do you, beautiful." I smiled.
"Now can we stop talking about this stupid basketball game? It's giving me a migraine," Monica pinched the bridge of her nose, trying to push back the idea of Russell and Sean meeting again. She shuddered with the thought.
"Damn, you really hate basketball, don't you?" He joked, laughing. This wasn't a laughing matter. "Too bad. We'll go and have a great time."
"Great," Monica said through her teeth. She would talk this over with Russell and make sure his stupid self wouldn't do something... stupid. "But what's up? What's happening in LA? Have I missed anything?"
"We all wish you were here," He whined into the phone. "But Apryl was arrested again."
"Again?" Monica asked. Apryl had been Monica's longtime friend. Apryl used to be a good, innocent girl, but ever since they graduated, she had turned into something else. She tended to get in trouble often.
"Yeah, she knocked out that bitch that her ex cheated on her with," Sean clearly sounded amused.
"Sean," I warned. "Maybe I should call her and see how she is."
"I'll be surprised if she isn't halfway to Oklahoma already just to vent your ass off," Sean joked. "Are you gonna call her?"
"Yeah, I love you, I'll talk to you later," Monica said quickly.
"I love you too, Monica. I'll see you soon," the way he said it didn't feel the same as before. It used to warm Monica's heart when he said this, but now? It felt... different. He was different. Or was it just Monica?
She took a deep breath to ease her nerves before dialing Apryl. It rang four times before she picked up.
"Girl, I am driving to Oklahoma City right now!" I laughed, knowing my friend too well. "I can't talk and drive I'll talk to you when I get there, M!"
